Cheap(er) pens like Cross Ion?
mcnicks | Apr 10 2006
I bought a Cross Ion pen after reading some recommendations and I am very impressed with it. To be honest, I have never really paid attention to pens in the past - I have just used whatever was lying around - but now I am convinced that I could be doing with a supply of decent pens around. Ideally what I would like is a pen (or set of pens) that is more of a standard shape than the Cross Ion, a bit cheaper, that writes exactly the same. I am left-handed and the fact that the ink from the Ion writes clear, smoothly and dries quickly is critical. Actually I would buy a few more Cross Ions but I know that, while my Ion is great for casual notes, its form factor would bother me when I was writing more extensively. Thx, 6 Comments

For me, I am a pen intensive guy, and I am a lefty. I use the Parker Jotter. Even as a ballpoint it is amazing. You gotta buy the refill, the same theory as printers applies. They give you mediocre starters. They have introduced the gel refill and it works amazing. Just a thought »

Agreed on the Parker Jotter. For leftys the gel ink is great. If you want to splurge a little, for about $20 you can get the Parker Infusion (http://www.parkerpen.com/sanford/consumer/parker/jhtml/collectionsDetail.jhtml?attributeId=PARKERATT1000013). It takes the same gel ink and has a nice heavy feel. I've have good luck with the Bic Atlantis and Bic Velocity for cheap pens that I can leave lying around in strategic places. The Fisher Bullet is so nice for the small size but I find their ink is not lefty-friendly. I am confessed pen addict. I've got enough pens that I can use a different one every week for a year! Take a look at PENWA (http://www.penwa.com) for a real nice selection. They are a great source for refills. I recently treated myself to a promotion gift and got a Montblanc Starwalker. This is truly the best pen I have ever had and I now understand why Montblanc is a "writing instrument" and not just another pen. They are costly but the reward is worth it. »

Oh this is going to get into so many bad things...no girl who has ever ventured into this territory for me on a date, has ever returned. For me the Parker Jotter is the thing...I did not always know this. I was a unibal micro, clipped to my shirt while traveling sort of guy...but it changed. I worship one TV person. Aaron Sorkin. The creator of Sports Night and the West Wing. Sorkin went on and on in interviews about the Jotter, even going so far as to make it the tool of both President Bartlet and Toby Zeigler. So I had to try. My friend Mike works in a pen store, one of those 1000 dollar a pen store. So he would talk to me about the permanance of quality pens, how they are better. I laughed. Screw that, I am an activist and a proletariat. 20 bucks for a pen is insane. Then I found the Jotter. The way it felt in my hand, the fact that Sorkin loved them, and the fact that there 6 bucks. Okay. Good. Covered. same jotter for a while, refillable. Got it. I read a study about the amount of plastic created by disposable pens. Shocking. So instead of buying a 100 dollar Mont Blanc, I bought 3 Jotters. Done. Now I feel less guilt about making the moleskine a splurge item. I am not buying pens. See, and my mother wonders why girls dont like me. I can wax about Jotters, and the joy of a ground ball thrown from my dad, but none of it is half way. its all poetry and passion. Nothing is just a job, or just fun. »

That is some recommendation! The only problem I can see with the Jotter is that it is plastic / metal and a bit slidey. I am quite fond of those rubber / silicone grips that appear on pens these days. »

I'm a lefty and have had a terrible time finding a gel-ink pen that didn't smear every time I tried to write. Then I found the Uniball Jetstream. The ink dries very quickly, I never have a problem with smearing. The other thing about this pen is that it is so smooth, the first time I tried it I thought it may be too slick. But that didn't last long. Now I have trouble using anything but a Jetstream. They've spoiled me. Can't go wrong for about $3 pop. »

I found this Zebra pen last week at Office Depot. http://www.zebrapen.com/ball-tele.html I really like the fact that it expands to a regular size pen and feels quite hefty. I like the G2 mini, but they don't feel comfortable in my hand. This Zebra pen was about $5 for 2 pens and 2 refils. »
