GTD 'cult'

so a friend of mine sent me this message. I am a big fan of GTD and find it very useful. I'm just puttin' this out there.

[INDENT]
I was excited to sit down to read "Getting Things Done" today. It's a great gift. I was so excited that I even read the acknowledgments, to be complete about the whole thing. At the end of the acknowledgments I noticed that David Allen thanks someone named "J-R" for being his "spiritual coach."

Uh-oh. "J-R" seemed like it might stand for John-Roger -- the controversial cult leader and spiritual guru. And it does.

http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/msia.html

David Allen, his wife, and many of his employees are ministers in the MSIA (Movement of Spritual Inner Awareness), John-Roger's church:

http://www.ndh.org/template.php3?ID=65 http://www.davidco.com/coaches_corner/Ana_Maria_Gonz%E1lez/article14.html (employee quoting John-Roger)

Anti-cult websites accuse GTD of being part of a program to recruit people into MSIA. Their view seems paranoid to me, but you can read it for yourself:

http://forum.rickross.com/viewtopic.php?t=2193 http://forum.rickross.com/viewtopic.php?p=15025&sid=e3195755a2185f9b4710580921d3f527

Now, I'm not saying that Getting Things Done isn't a good book about priorities and organization. David Allen may have very good advice about that stuff. But I am saying don't go to a David Allen seminar, get mixed up with the David Allen Company, or get too involved with the hard-core GTD crowd -- at least not without taking some anti-brainwashing measures. Seriously. This John-Roger character and his followers are not a joke.

I learned about John-Roger a long time ago, as it happens, because in high school I read a self-help book called "Life 101" that he "co-wrote" with Peter McWilliams, the poet and anti-drug-war activist. In 1994, not long after I read "Life 101," McWilliams wrote an expose called "Life 102: What to Do When Your Guru Sues You." McWilliams left MSIA in 1994 after 15 years of being brainwashed. It turned out that John-Roger manipulated him into giving him co-authorship in return for keeping McWilliams alive. You see, John-Roger had the power to keep McWilliams alive because -- and this will surprise you -- John-Roger claims to be the incarnation of God on earth.

John-Roger has also made headlines in connection with Arianna Huffington -- who admits to being a close friend and who has been accused (though she's never admitted it) of being an MSIA minister as well.

There was a long arguement...

There was a long arguement on the official forums as well.

If it bothers you that there is a connection like this, then drop out of GTD.

Me personally, I don't care what DA spiritual philosophy is. I like the framework that he has presented in the form of GTD and I will continue to use it daily.

Interesting to know this, but it won't stop me from doing GTD.

Hey. I'm doing gtd. it makes my life pretty unambigiously better.

It's interesting, though. I had no idea.

Interesting

Very interesting stuff. I thought that many of the concepts were Buddhist in nature. Of course, I am a follower of Buddhist philosophy.

Regardless, GTD sure does help me operate on a higher level and I will still relate to it the same way.

mass appeal is the cornerstone of a good cult.

i don't think much of this matters ultimately to the message or the implementation of GTD.

All of what is being...

All of what is being asserted here may be true. However, I did not get into GTD looking for spiritual guidance. My spiritual life is driven by other things.

The GTD system has improved my productivity in many ways. The issues you raise are not a problem unless I allow myself to get wrapped up in it and start looking to David for spiritual guidance.

GTD makes my life easier. No cult necessary.

And that's my take as well. I don't care whether you believe in God, Father Christmas or UFOs, as long as you don't let it affect your rational life.

I would posit that you still have no idea. Sounds like there's low-level thrash being tossed around in different corners of the net but no real evidence of a significant connection.

Either way, makes no difference to me. If Davidco was using the forums or his organization to push folks into a cult situation, that would be one thing, but I sure see no sign of that.

Anyway, who needs another cult. GTD is already a cult. (append smiley as needed)

Look, I hate to be...

Look, I hate to be an asshole about this, but i feel I got two (three) fairly touchy responses. This is what it is, just sharing information, and thought I got three fairly attackish responses. Chill out. Not cool.

I do GTD. I like it. It's helpful. I think this is useful information, whatever. Christ. Whiney "If you don't like it then leave!" responses i think are kinda mean. Should I not have shared this?

Whatever.

I vote for "thanks for the post"

Duus,
I'm glad you posted this information. I'm still going to use GTD, I LOVE it and it works great for me. I'm backing your decision to post the information you received because I believe we should talk about something like this. If (eeep) we are indeed slowly being indoctrinated into a cult, or even being influenced by one (or even if we're not) the best thing to do is to discuss such an idea... that's how true cults work, you're not allowed to question anything. We should always question. ALWAYS. Its the times when you're not allowed to question that one should begin to worry.

I'm also thanking you for your post because of the way in which you presented the information. You disclosed your source as well as noting that you could not confirm any of the information which was being put forth to us. You also remained objective in voice (*note to readers, I'm talking about what Duus actually wrote himself). IMHO those are the trademarks of information sharing (for its own sake) rather than just gossip.

Thanks
