3x5 Tickler file (a la S.H.E)

I started a 3x5 tickler file according to the Sidetracked Home Executive system and I've come up with an annoyance and wanted to know how you solve this problem.

I have a "store" that I go to on an irregular basis. But while I'm there, I need to be reminded to pick up some groceries I can't find elsewhere when I run out.

I'm thinking of creating a separate "folder" called "this store" and just drop a card in there for each item as I remember them, or alternatively, just stick a card in there and update the one card. Does this sound right, or should I try something else?

What I do for such...

What I do for such places is to keep a list (in my case on my Palm -- which is not where I keep my NAs) for each such place. I have 'camping shop' 'garden centre' and 'town' lists for example.

I find that sort of list has to be in something that you WILL have with you when you get to the shop. Having to remember specially doesn't work for me.

I've got separate 3 x...

I've got separate 3 x 5's for Target, Sam's/Costco, and Home Depot/Lowe's. Sometimes I even separate Kroger and Publix.

I agree with Steve -- whatever works for you and that you'll have with you when you get there. I think Pooks keeps her "Errands" cards in her Moleskine's pocket, so she'll have them when she's on the go.

Ditto the other replies. ...

Ditto the other replies. Specific stores are specific contexts, and they need to travel with you, either a card or a pocket per context (I go with one card per) so you'll have them when you're in that context.

I think I see that...

I think I see that I need to go with having a separate tab/folder in my 3x5 file for the store. I already have a notebook that is acting as my capture tool then at the end/beginning of the day I review that notebook for actions or items needing transferring to my file/calendar/contacts.

I'm not sure having a separate card in a case is the answer for me, but maybe I should have a separate tab on my notebook for this kind of capture or should I leave it in freeform style and transfer the information during my daily review?

As long as I can...

As long as I can remember, my mom has always kept a running grocery list on the refrigerator, attached with a magnet glued to the back. Before she goes to the grocery, she rearranges the list according to the layout of the store so she won't have to backtrack when she's there. Then she just takes that list with her.

It's really the same thing a lot of us are doing, just in a different medium.

It's similar to Merlin's sticky index cards stuck up all over his house.

Central Market has free shopping lists that are in the order of the store. They are soooo helpful!

But every now and then they flop the store's layout, just to throw you off. ;-)
