WEB + iPhone + GTD or iPhone Notes
bobfa | Jul 3 2007
So could we figure out how to get a nice display of one of the online GTD things like backpack. Somehow to do GTD with the iPhone without local tasks. Or could we just label notes properly and see if that would work. I guess I will be carrying the hipster for a while longer... 9 Comments

Tracks might be worth testing, too. No iPhone here to do it myself, though. »
Tracks, Vitalist, and Stikkit all...Submitted by Berko on July 4, 2007 - 8:04pm.
Tracks, Vitalist, and Stikkit all seem to work on iPhone. Not sure which one I'll end up going with. I suspec that by the time I make a choice Apple will have released a software update to enable synching of to-do's. »

Leopard supports TODO lists inside Mail, and have been removed from iCal. My guess, is that Apple is simply waiting on Leopard to be released to introduce TODO lists and NOTES syncing (Notes are inside Mail as well). In fact, NOTES are actually stored on the IMAP server along with TODOs. I use iGTD which is the best GTD application available I have used for my needs and how it integrates with everything. Hopefully, sooner, rather than later, iGTD will support a way to publish your stuff for access via the iPhone. A way around this now, is to use the iCal PHP script, that will display an iCal file in a HTTP browser, almost looking like the iCal calendar itself. Doing so, you can get your TODO items in iCal. »

My mistake. iCal in Leopard DOES support ToDo's, but you can also access them through a different type of viewing system via Mail.app, and add ToDo's directly via Mail.app. In addition, ToDo's can be optionally stored on the IMAP server. How this is going to work in the grand-scheme of things will be interesting to see. »

I just moved to a web host that has RoR, and the first thing I did was to install Tracks. I like Tracks because it is open source — so even if development stops, I can continue to update it myself if I so desire. I like the way Tracks looks on the iPhone. Some of the links are too small in the full page view, but if I view the page widescreen, they are tapable. I think I am going to try to customize the code to make text a few points larger, and I'll be happy. Until I alter text sizes, a fine workaround is to double tap the grey titlebar for any list in Tracks. iSafari correctly zooms into the width of the list, which makes links and buttons readily tapable. I don't mind zooming for normal web pages, but for a web app that I will be using a lot, I would like to minimize the need for zooming. I love being able to tap a phone number in one of my @Calls list and have the phone start dialing. :) I'm pretty sure this works in other web pages as well (I just haven't tried it yet, as I haven't found a phone number on a website that I want to call). I think I am going to give Vitalist a fair trial, as I just noticed Vitalist.mobi (which is designed for small screen viewing without the need for zooming). My 2? Jim »
GTD app exporting contexts to Ta-da list for iPhone yearning...Submitted by wharpua on July 12, 2007 - 5:32am.
I'm the first to admit that I know nothing about coding, but I'd really love for OmniFocus or iGTD to somehow be able to export all contexts to Ta-Da list (or something comparably simple), with each context as its own list. Anyone know if that would be possible? I haven't looked into vitalist or listingly yet (an option I just saw but haven't learned much about), but I'm wary of resuming the 'quest for a better, entirely different system' time-sink just because I now have shiny new mobile-web access. »
iPhone & Next Action ListsSubmitted by Vykus on August 5, 2007 - 4:10pm.
I thought of a sweet way to manage your Next Action Lists on the iPhone without having to rely on Web 2.0 apps and an internet connection. I use the address book and here's how I do it. I created a group named GTD. I add projects as if they were people. By doing so each project has its own card. In the name field I put the name of the project. Now all I do is add the list of next actions for that project in the "notes" field. By doing this, nothing else shows up on the card (like empty fields for phone numbers). It's just your project name at the top and the action list below! Once you complete an action, just go to "edit field" and remove the action. A perfect use of the database already installed on the iPhone. Now you can review your next actions list anywhere!! Hope this helps!! Vykus »
Ever since getting an iPhone...Submitted by vrillusions on August 14, 2007 - 8:44am.
Ever since getting an iPhone this has been an issue. Prior to this I had a palm pilot and did essentially what David Allen even said which is just using notes. Set a different category for each of your contexts and each note is a new task. Worked great. I could reorder tasks as I needed, reassign to different contexts by changing the category, etc. Then I go to the notes in the iPhone and seriously disappointed in how featureless it is. If it had two things that I figured would be pretty obvious I would be happy. A way to reorder notes (right now it just puts the most recently edited at the top). A way to categorize notes (even if you want to give it a more hip name like "tag"). Without those it's been so hard to use. I've tried just making a note with the title being the context, but it's still just been a struggle to use. As far as web-based GTD, I like http://nozbe.com/)">http://inozbe.com/ (which is the iphone version of http://nozbe.com/). It's rather limited in the free edition (5 projects max, can add 1 context aside from the 10 or so they give you) but it works nicely. The thing that I don't like about web apps for things like this is when it comes to tasks and either adding or removing things, I want access to it NOW. I don't want to wait for a page to load, especially over edge. Then navigate through some menus, inozbe doesn't remember your login info so you would have to constantly log in, etc. If I need to add something, I want to get to a note pad and type it out and get back to doing stuff asap. Same thing when I finish something. And then those rare occasions you don't have a connection, you have no access. In case I didn't make my point big enough, I don't use nozbe or any other web apps for this :) . Right now I just struggle with notes on the iphone. I still carry my palm pilot around because of some apps on there I still use and because of the notepad. I really hope they do some improvement over the notes app. »
