About to buy a Tom Bihn Empire Builder - Somebody stop me!
Scott Elias | Jul 26 2007
The title says it all. I'm dying to own one of these for my new MacBook Pro. I want to use it for work and grad school and I've read nothing but raves about them. Anyone own one? How's the quality and size? Do you use the Brain Cell or something else? 15 Comments

Ha! You'll probably find nothing but enablers here! The only way I'd try to convince someone from buying one of these is if it was the last one, and I wanted it! I don't own a Tom Bihn bag yet, (I can't quite justify replacing my Eagle Creek laptop bag) but I would love to have one. »

Eh, I'll give it a try, just to be contrarian. It's a laptop bag. And you're thinking of spending $150 on it. They give perfectly functional laptop bags away at conventions and stuff, and you're thinking of spending $150 on one. What else could you do with that money? Plus, it's 3 and 1/4 pounds empty. Is your laptop so light you need to add weight to it? Will owning it make you happy? Or will you get bored with it and end up wanting something else? Note: this post not entirely serious. »
Heavy bagSubmitted by spalmer47 on July 27, 2007 - 3:59am.
At over 3lbs, it's the weight of a computer already when empty. One of the reviewers said how heavy it was when packed. I also find that the more pockets I have, the more things I carry, and the heavier the load is. I'm usually happiest with a simple, nearly empty, bag. »

OK. This is good. BTW - neither of you have one of these bags, right? ;) »
L.L. Bean Turbo Hauler Bag?Submitted by mwr on July 27, 2007 - 3:22pm.
Considered an L.L. Bean Turbo Hauler Bag? $49 starting price. I've got an older L.L. Bean Big Easy bag from around 2003 or 2004 that is somewhat similar, but it's been discontinued. Mine weighs 3 pounds empty, but it's tons more comfortable than the regular nylon Dell laptop bag it replaced -- due to a vastly improved shoulder strap. If the Turbo Hauler is only 2 pounds, that should be even better. Weight is pretty subjective, I guess. I often bike to work with that bag, a 14" laptop, power adapter, smaller portable hard drive, umbrella, raincoat, flashlight, Treo, a change of clothes, etc. But I only have to go two miles each way. »

Too bad. My bag's laptop sleeve might handle it (a friend tried it out with their ginormous Dell widescreen once), but I can't find it for sale anywhere now. How about a MacCase Messenger? »

Interesting. I'm also intrigued by the a nice write-up at CIO.com), but now I'm not sure about the briefcase style vs. the messenger style -- I work at a high school, attend CSU for grad school, but need something that won't look "juvenile" in the School Board office as well... »
