getting started with remind

hi!

I’ve been curious about Remind for a long time after reading Mike Harris’ introduction, but only just got around to trying to install/use it.

I’ve never done anything in Terminal (like several other people who left comments to the original post), but after a lot of fiddling around I managed to install the program and set up a .reminders file. Problem is, I can’t seem to actually figure out how to call up any of the reminders. “rem” or “remind” (and variants of) are “command[s] not found.”

I know so little that I’m not even sure what information I need to give to get help, but if anyone has a sense of where a newbie would likely go wrong, or could offer any pointers, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Jennifer

Possibly helpful answer

I think this is likely:

You need to find where the application is installed (either by searching in the finder or by using the UNIX tool find from Terminal.app; find / -name remind -print). You will then need to add the directory to your path by editing a file in your home directory called .profile and inserting a line that looks like this:

export PATH=$PATH:[the directory that has remind]

So if remind is in /usr/local/bin it would look like

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin

Re: getting started with remind

Thanks for the feedback, Owen…I tried editing that file (which had nothing in it - can that be right?) but it doesn’t seem to have changed anything. The really curious thing is that this:

!/bin/bash

/usr/local/bin/remind -o ~/.reminders

in Geektool does produce output! So I guess it may not really be a problem, as long as I’m getting the reminders to display somewhere, but it’s kind of bizarre.

Path Settings

Maybe you’ve already tried this, but you need to open a new Terminal window to have the new path settings go into effect. So if you tried the command in the same window you edited the .profile, that would explain why it wasn’t working.

I hadn’t tried that - it

I hadn’t tried that - it works now!

Thanks so much!

Additionally, (and for future reference to make this sort of thing easier) you can just run the source command to reload your profile in the current terminal.

‘source .profile’

3mindme.com: Email reminder gateway

Hi, I just created a simple email gateway that works similar to remind: just email “tomorow@3mindme.com” or “jan5th@remindme.com” or “nexttuesday@3mindme.com” and it’ll just forward whatever you sent back to you at the specified time. Anyway, I just made it and I’m looking for feedback on how to make it more helpful, and I’d welcome any advice you have. Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you!
