”What’s 43 Folders?”
43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

43 Folders Wiki

The long-promised 43 Folders Wiki is finally up and running at http://wiki.43folders.com/. W00t.

With the help of a few intrepid barn raisers, we’ve started slapping together the beginnings of what I know will become a fascinating adjunct to the main site and our 1,600-strong Google Group.

It’s yours to contribute to and to edit as you see fit. As with the mothership, though, I do ask everyone’s help in respecting the Mac-centric focus of the site (that means no drive-by Windows spam, please). Apart from that, go nuts. Well, maybe not nuts exactly, but please consider doing what you can to help tend our little information garden.

You can use the discussion area of each page or leave comments here. Thanks to everyone for pitching in, and welcome aboard!

Update 2005-03-24 09:13:18: I’m pleased to note that “The Rules” have been wildly re-jiggered to remove any restrictions on content based on platform.

While I unapologetically stand by my desire to keep the 43 Folders blog focused on the needs of Mac users, there’s absolutely no reason to try and social-engineer a community site like our wiki. I trust our visitors implicitly to do good work and to make smart decisions; it is they who should decide what works and what doesn’t. And based on the amazing progress they’ve made over just 4 or so days, I’m more confident than ever that the wiki will grow into a resource that benefits people far beyond the focus I’ll continue to hold here on the mothership.

Thanks to the many amazing contributors and to everyone who’s shared their opinion on how best to build a site that works for as many people as possible.

I’m curious, by “respect the Mac centric focus of the site” do you mean we shouldn’t be adding GTD software tips for Windows? Or we should only add those tips if they’re cross platform?

Looks like we spend this weekend the same way - I set up MediaWiki on PigPog to set off a Wiki about Creativity.

(Actually, there’s a ‘Productivity’ section on there, so I think it’s time for me to go add a link from there to the 43F Wiki.)

Danno: It’s hard to say what’s always appropriate for the site (as I’ve obviously struggled to frame in a positive way).

I would, in general discourage additions that aren’t targeted at Mac users. There are many great ideas that are agnostic of platform, but as far as specific app tips that are impossible for Mac users to use: yeah, I would discourage that, I think.

I wanted to post and thank you for this site (and now this wiki…). It’s a terrific resource. Bravo!

I love Macs and would rather use one, but I am stuck on a PC at work. Captive Windows users need as much (or more) productivity tools in the world of ‘helpful’ MS widgets like the talking paperclips. So, I would encourage more balance between PC and Mac since many of us are not Windows users by choice, but because of corporate policies.

I’d encourage folks who are worried about Windows stuff not appearing to stop by this page and its related discussion.

I’m open to a solution that works for the community (while maintaining our primary focus on Macs).

@nonjo: Just good ole Safari with a few additions (Sogudi, Debug Mode; Saft; a few bookmarks in the bar). Something look different about it?

Maybe we can create a wiki page for the Hipster PDA? I love my Hipster PDA, but I would like to see more info about how other people use their Hipster PDAs. For example, I would love to read other people’s:

  • product recommendations
  • notational systems
  • strategies for syncing and integration with other lists and organizers

Even though the beauty of the Hipster PDA is its low-tech simplicity, you could almost productize it! Not a bad idea..
