Robert Daeley: Do Zen Monk Robes Have Pockets?

Celsius1414: Zen Pockets

Robert considers the vast amount of stuff most of us carry around every day—where can we lighten our loads and empty our pockets?

For an era when millions of urban folks have supposedly left behind the burdens of a rural existence, we sure are burdening ourselves like pack mules. Take a look around at the next business gathering, especially if there are a lot of geeks in the room — check out the bulging cargo pants and Bat-Belts of devices, the modern geek’s pocket protectors. Wonder at the laptop bags and suitcases with hidden crannies stuffed full of all manner of supplies.

True story: About 4 years...

True story: About 4 years ago I visited the Jokhang temple in Lhasa, the central shrine of Tibetan Buddhism. A group of pilgrims from Hong Kong, led by a saffron-robed monk, entered one of the side chapels for a blessing from the resident monk at the same time that I did. As I approached the resident monk for a blessing, I heard the unmistakable ring tone notes of "Happy Birthday" and turned to see the visiting monk whip his cellphone out of his pocket.

So, Tibetan monks do have pockets!
