Testing the 43F redesign: Report bugs and comments here

I've flipped on this staged version of the site redesign so I can do some testing, iron out some bugs, and see how the load will be handled by WordPress.

There's lots of new stuff to talk about here, so feel free to ask questions, make comments and report bugs in this thread. I'll delete it when this officially goes live. If anything huge pops out (or I've missed something brutally obvious about security, for example) email 43bugs@undisclosedlocation.com or hit me on the AIM (aim:hotdogsladies).

Thanks for your patience while the dust settles.

Damn. I get to play...

Damn. I get to play "grumpy old man", given the flurry of "Yay!"'s you're getting..

  • Yay for Wordpress. Just becayse I like it

  • Overall design looks cold. Yes, it's cleaner than the previous one, but also clinical. Don't ask me why - if I could tell you, I'd probably work as a site designer ;) And please, please, PLEASE don't do what the cool kids do and slap a picture on top. (It's way overused by now)

  • The left sidebar now stretches 4 pages down. That's a bit far for me.. You might want to invest into a "menu" on top. I'm not going so far as to say drop-down - but how about "About", "Archives", "Press", etc..

  • "Recent Entries"? I never minded with the two sidebars, but now that there's one, you might want to save space and cull it. I mean, why? They are right on your home page.

  • I'd move the RSS badge further up. Then again, that's probably old-school. All the browsers that count automatically "get" feeds. I like the badges behind a "more badges" button

  • I'd put the comment feeds closer to the comments, after "Theoretically Related". If I'm interested in signing up for the comment feed, I'm surely interested in the comments first.

  • Comments in reverse order? That's, well, how do I say it politely? I don't think I can. It's just a bad idea. Most of your readers will hit the site after comments are posted. Now reading them in reverser order, I'll never know what the heck that new comment is replying to. I think I get the idea behind it - make it easy for returning people.

But returning people will most likely subscribe to the comment feed. Remember, we're all productivity gadget addicted around here ;)

  • Paged comments? What is this, a book? This is the web. A page can have arbitrary length, and scrolling up and down is easier than changing pages. (Scrolling is on the mousewheel, or the space bar. Links require me to find the link and click on it). Plus, it makes searching comments a pain. Yes, theoretically there is "Show all" - but it's kind of annoying to have to press it.

  • I was going to moan about the ad, but I see you just moved it ;)

I'm sorry I'm sounding so negative - I'm probably just a curmudgeon longing for the old design. So let me instead say "Thanks!" that you're putting effort in a redesign. You know you don't have to - we're all addicted anyways. So it's doubly appreciated. (Still... if you could fix a couple things... ;)

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
