Filing questions

Moving from my in-box saga, I am now filing my stuff from my in-box and I have some questions.

I have a two drawer file cabinet and everything fits in the two drawers, a little snugly, but with some wiggle room. I would prefer not to buy another filing cabinet right now (it's about the expense and the space in my office, but also the fear that more space to dump things will be a disincentive to throwing things away). I also have a file holder on top of my desk into which I put my tickler file and a small handful of files that I need to access daily.

I want to know what you all archive and how? I have a really thick folder of product manuals and warranties (yes, I went through it and got rid of everything that pertains to stuff I don't own anymore) that I could archive, but should still be relatively accessible so that I will put new stuff in there as it comes in. What do you do in cases like this?

I have all my tax stuff from previous years archived in a miracle box. Is this a good way to deal with my "product" file? What else do you all archive? How do you archive? Do you have a system for tracking what is there? How do you keep it accessible? And one more thing, what papers should I put in a safety deposit box?

Sounds like you're doing fine. Those questions are things you'll answer yourself as needed, in all honesty.

My filing cabinet gets purged when full, and I purge things that are purgeable, and scan the rest and toss them. I figure that way I can re-create a destroyed folder ad-hoc.

The scans end up in DEVONthink.

I keep tax returns on-hand for the minimum required time and then toss them. WIth extreme prejudice.

Good things to put in a safe deposit box:

The most recent backup of my Attic (archives) and Documents, as well as any current encryption keys I'm dependant upon.

Stock certificates in some rare circumstances where I have physical certificiates.

Cash. Having at least 2k in cash in something other than your mattress is critical if you're an avid spender who isn't especially liquid for that very reason ;)

Social Security Cards for wife and I, sometimes passports if I don't think I'm going to need it for a few months. I don't need it more than once every couple of years.

Vehicle Titles.

Some contracts. My lease, for example. (C'mon the guy has access to the place.)

A miniDV tape of the most recent walkthrough of the ranch. I do this for insurance purposes.

Jewelry that is rarely used but has sentimental value.
