What about little or no will to do things?

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if someone has ever experienced this kind of "chronic fatigue" or simply put, lack of will or energy to do simple things.

My current status: I work as a CIO for two countries in a big company. I have a strong technical background (more than 15 years) and now I have to deal with many different problems (specially company politics), aside of pure technical situations. My main problem, as I mentioned before, is the chronic lack of energy to do things apart from my job. I always wanted to learn french and german or to read more books (I used to read 4 or 5 books a month), but when I get home, I don?t want to do anything but rest. I?ve tried everything: meditation, medication, exercise (I do some workout regularly), 8-hour sleep cycles, balanced food, etc., but nothing seems to work, or at least, to have lasting effects.

Lately, I?ve been experiencing concentration and lack of focus problems, which is bad for my job. It seems that the problem is starting to affect my work as well.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi again, I haven?t told you...

Hi again,

I haven?t told you about my "special" circumstances. I landed on my current job almost two years ago. Back at that time, I was really happy, since I was leaving a struggling company and I was tired of doing always the same things. The new venture was really challenging, since I was going to escalate many positions from an IT Engineer to Manager of the IT departments of 6 assembly plants in two countries.

At the beginning, everything ran smoothly. I was learning and absorbing new things like a sponge, but some months later, I realized that my job was reducing to make limited decisions (because our department depends on the headquarters, located in another country), more and more paperwork and office politics, and not to take part into the technical tasks I used to enjoy in my prior jobs. I used to think that this was normal, since I was hired to have managerial roles instead of technical ones. Money improved a lot, so my will and desires to get involved into another more "nuts and bolts" job started to dim.

Another thing to consider is the fact that I was not born in the country where I?m living now and the cultural differences (the way of working) is really different. In my opinion, people here is awfully slow in many aspects, and to make anything work, it requires a lot of effort and negotiating skills. They keep resisting to change without a good reason.

At last, but not least, I live in a small town, and to get a similar job to the one that I have is very difficult. I?ve considered moving (yet again) to look for greener pastures, but when I think in all the problems and discomfort that coming here caused, I stop and think twice.

The results? Little or no will to do anything, lack of motivation, a progressive loss of interest in recreational activities (I used to read a lot and do some homebrew research into new products, software, etc.), isolation (I don?t see my friends as I used to), etc. Now my main "sport" is to watch tv for hours and hours, to try stop thinking about my situation.

I?ve tried meditation, I started to read about Bhuddism, I use some relaxation MP3 files, but nothing seems to work.

As I told you, any ideas would be great.

Cheers.
