”What’s 43 Folders?”
43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

Anyone else having problems replying to emails?

I'm so bad replying to emails. They just keep piling. I read them the moment they come, but something keeps me from replying or acting on them. How do you deal with emails? Do having specific blocks of time devoted to email writing works for you? How you balance replying to emails with the other parts of your work? Is anyone using Groupwise for your emails? Any tips for using it? The new version is able to attach labels to the emails and changes the color of the header accordingly. Now I have a very colorful inbox but as full as before.

First of all, thanks for...

First of all, thanks for the tips (esp. for the link, hey, more MerlinMannia for my del.icio.us collection). I wish I knew what a 'smart folder' is, or works like. I haven't used a Mac in zillion years, sigh.

About what keeps me from replying or acting on emails, well, I read once a book about procrastination (hey, don't we procrastinators read tons of book on procrastinating?) and I came to the conclusion that could be a series of things: rebellion of the fact that *I* will decide when to reply to you, the need to do everything perfectly and thoroughly, sometimes just plain avoiding having to justify myself (and boy, do I get annoying, nagging emails asking why I didn't get this or that). I think that's the worst part (and here we're getting into confesion mood) all this people asking things from you, help me, give me, tell me. :) But that is part of the metaphysics of email. I guess I just have a too passional relationship with email. ;)

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
