43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

Boilerplate Checklists

Does anyone use any sort of "boilerplate" checklists for completing a project? For example, I'm developing a website, and I want to write up a checklist of everything I need to do for it. I'm doing pretty much all of it except for writing content, but there are a lot of things that have to be done before other things can be done. In other words, do any of you use standard checklists for completing similar projects?

Project completion checklist

We have a requirement that a standard format closeout report is completed that summarises what was achieved and the following checkpoints must be answered.

  • Who is responsible for tracking the benefits?
  • Is the sponsor satisified that the objectives have been met?
  • Has the customer accepted the deliverables?
  • Has the project expenditure been finalised and have variances against budget been explained?
  • Has the intellectual property from the project been managed?
  • Are all the project documents filed correctly?
  • Has all the project equipment been returned or reallocated?
  • Have the project stakeholders been told that the project has finished?
  • Have project staff been given a performance appraisal?
  • What reccommendations do you have to improve the processes?

When all this is done the project team should celebrate the end of the project!

This may sound like a lot of work but the aim is to ensure that everybody involved knows that the project is finished.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
