Bag Organizers

Today I ordered a fleet of WaterField/SFBags gear pouches, an iPod supercase, and a CableGuy.

They seemed to the best way to compartmentalize my assorted junk in my bag. I usually have two bags in my rotation: the Boblbee for my daily grind and carrying around cameras, a laptop, overnight/weekend trips out of town, and another bag for just around town and general erranding.

The problem is that this means I have to sort and file and assemble various bits and pieces. It is my hope that this will aid in my swapping, since I can just grab the appropriate pouches based on what I want.

Anyone else tried these? Anyone else found another solution that is elegant/stylish and servicable?

It almost seems as if the best bag configuration would be similar to those Russian dolls that sit inside each other. There'd be a big bag with all stuff and then a crucial bag inside that you could take out and with you when running stealth missions for Eris.

I do that, actually. I do precisely that. I have a big (size: Large, not those 'medium' ones you usually see around) timbuk2 messenger bag.

In the large bag there is
1 thermos (coffee)
2 laptop (sometimes)
3 cables (always)
4 books i'm reading
5 this cool old faux leather thing which is designed to carry manila folders. In it is my "moble GTD filing system." For example, there is an INBOX folder and an ACTION folder within.
6 a small flip-top bag, which is kept "open" when it's in the large bag, which basically makes it into a big pocket. In the small flip-top bag, there is:
a. composition book (general capture device)
b. wallet
c. iPod (used as PDA, has my kGTD next actions on it)
d. keys
e. a small waterproof bag which contains
i. ibuprofen
ii. bandaids
iii. swiss army knife
iv. change

If I want to leave behind my big bag, like at my office, and want to walk around, it takes 2 seconds to take out the flip-top bag and i'm assured that all important things are in there.

I'll let you in on a secret: i think of my bag--broadly defined, as this evolving modular thing--as my 'droid. You know, it follows me around and keeps track of things for me. Sometimes I even call it "R-0.1 beta". You know, it's like not at a full version number yet. Certainly not like "R2" or something.
