4x6

Success! I am now happily printing my lists onto index cards. Now, my hipster experiment can begin.

I'm happily married to kGTD, which is not to say that we don't have our little spats. While kGTD is my homebase for action planning, I've been taking my task lists on the road using a Windows mobile Missing Sync, which works well.

I'm using uncoated, blank, white 4"x6" cards and a HP Photosmart 320 photo printer. Works great. Even better with the ink set to low volume.

This trip started out trying to use 3x5 cards, but I couldn't get them to work with the printers I have. But, its fine using 4x6 cards because they fit in the back pocket of my 501 jeans and my suit jacket breast pocket easily. And, they give you more surface on which to write. But, I'll have to supersize my moleskine pocket cahier to a 5x8.

So, for all you out there who are are getting frustrated trying to print on 3x5, try and big up to 4x6 index cards.

It's like looking at the carpet through a straw

Good question. If I have a smartphone thats working so nicely sync'ng to iCal, why do I want to use index cards for my projects and tasks? I asked myself that. Especially since I strived so hard to get a good device/software combination that woks flawlessly with my Mac.

Couple of drawbacks in a smartphone: It's pretty much read only. Getting text information into your GTD system through the phone keypad is not a good idea. Also, the Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 applications dont support categories*, making it weak for GTD. Otherwise works flawlessly. I can check off items on the phone; sync with Missing Sync to iCal and sync to kGTD; and, round-trip.

What are you using to sync? PPC 6700 is WM5. Isn't it? Of course, having a qwerty keypad changes everything. How do you like using your device for GTD?

Right now, I carry my phone and bring my pocket notebook to meetings and such to capture Inbox items. So, I plan on using the index cards inside my notebook. The huge advantage with the index cards is that you can "grok" much more information at once. Whereas with a smartphone, trying to navigate your schedule, projects, tasks and contacts is like looking at the carpet through a straw.

I'll continue to sync my smartphone and will rely on it for contacts and appointments and my @phone tasks using the built in smartphone apps.

The additional layer of work involves printing the cards and re-entering information. The data re-entry involves checking of completed items and entering in new items in kGTD. So, it's substantial effort. But, each step is doable. Whereas with the smartphone there's no way to capture the same amount of information, unless of course you use the multi-media functionallity. I have tried to GTD using voice and video, but it doesn't work.

*Papyrus is a thrid-party app I tried which uses the built-in Smartphone database and provides categories for to-dos, contacts, calendar events, etc. And, on syn'ng to iCal and AddressBook with Missing Sync, all the categories magically come across. It has a butt-ugly interface with many options.
