Question for the Excel experts....

A co-worker and I were having an interesting discussion this morning about a problem she was having. When she copied dates in Excel, it would add 4 years to her date. After a little research, I discovered that there is a check box under Tools>Options>Calculations...it says "1904 date system".

Can anyone tell me what function this would have?

Why would someone want to use a "1904 date system"?
