Free (or at least way cheaper) DEVONThink alternative?

I rather like the idea of having a program to manage all my digital crap, since I suck at doing it myself. DEVONThink looks nice, but I just don't have that kind of money. I've been using Journler 2.0, but it's a bit clunky, particularly in how it does entries with tables. Yeek.
Any recomendations?

That's still more of a manual than a use-case, though. I mean, I get that you put documents in it, organize them into groups, look for "similar" documents, etc.
The only real standout feature seems to be the concordance stuff, and my (possibly wrong) feeling is that a decent search utility will get you at least 80% of the way there. Yea? Nay?
Was there a "defining moment" for any of the hardcore DT users that would explain what I'm missing out on?
(I'm still not trying to be snarky, I just want to be enlightened!)
