OmniFocus v. iGTD

Just curious if Mac users see these two apps (OmniFocus is still in beta) as the main competition in OS X. It seems from this forum and others that Mac users spend most time talking about these than other apps (Actiontastic, Thinking Rock, etc). Would anyone care to predict the outcome of a "race" between the two apps? Can OmniFocus keep up if iGTD? Perhaps OmniFocus will arrive too late given iGTD's popularity and price. Or is it comparing apples and oranges?

OF public alpha might have a been bad idea

I really liked OmniFocus when I first got in on the alpha (couple months ago), but it just isn't going to meet my needs. I would love to see a really simple task management app that appeals to a lot of different people and fits into a lot of different workflows by being as simple and flexible as possible (like Kinkless, but without the bugs and more scriptability). But there are too many features in OF that are meant to accommodate non-GTD workflows.

I was totally fine with that so long as it didn't interfere with using OF in a strict GTD workflow (like the suggestion to add task priorities to OF so long as they could be turned completely off), but when Omni put a "No Context" context in the Contexts view I gave up on OF. No task without an assigned context should be seen anywhere in the Context list. It requires the user to drop out of widget-cranking mode and into inbox processing mode every time they look at their context list. That defeats the whole purpose of a next action list which is supposed to remove the burden of planning from our minds while we concentrate on actually doing things. It wasn't the only feature that I didn't like, but it was enough to make me stop using OF.

Several users voiced their objections on the forums and in email feedback, suggesting that the "No Context" database view would be better if it were a subsection of the Inbox, but the voices of the many less-strict-GTD users won out. I don't blame Omni for making the choice they did -- after all they want OF to sell to as many people as possible -- but I think every time they make a choice like this OF gets a little bit closer to being an Outlook clone rather than a truly unique app. Regardless, I don't think it's for me.

I wonder what OF would look like if they had not done the public alpha. Perhaps it would have been more strictly GTD-oriented. I think both OF and iGTD will coexist for a long time as both have pretty supportive user bases.

I'm using a todo.txt file now along with Gina Trapani's scripts and several custom scripts of my own. I've got repeating tasks, task archives, self-updating sequential projects and I'm working on mobile sync with my iPod and Palm and maybe even a Remember the Milk extension (still debating if I want to use RtM).

I wish I'd rolled my own a long time ago.
