Labelers

...or not labelers? Sheeplike, I bought a Brother P-Touch labeler because The David said I had to. :) I've used it on occasion, but for the life of me, I don't understand how it's better at labeling file folders than a seven-cent (in bulk) ballpoint pen. What am I missing?

I think we charactize cursive...

I think we charactize cursive as having all the letters connected together, and in printing the letters aren't connected. But it's hard to find examples nowadays, because it isn't so important in education any more.

The definition of "cursive" is a bit up in the air, as is "italic." There are some italic faces that are almost completely cursive in that the letterforms have definite "entry points." But many italics are simply sloped romans. They've been sloped 10 degrees and are thus distorted.

It seems to me that "cursive" doesn't necessarily mean that the letters will join together, but that certainly is a distinctive characteristic. Another clue is the sloped nature, but I think most important is the flow of the letters, either for the individual letterform or from one letter to another.

(Yes, I'm a typography nerd. I'm hoping to get this shirt for myself.)

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
