43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

Hello from London

Hello, just thought I'd do exactly what it says on the tin by saying hi.

I'm new to the boards and since I'll be working for myself in two very short weeks (just 9 working days as today's a bank holiday here in the UK) I'm trying to get a handle on things. I'll be working as a writer having been at a tabloid style mag for the last couple of years. It's exciting but very scary.

I read GTD cover to cover around six months ago but haven't really had a chance to implement very much of it really. Apart from the labelmaker which I *love*.

I've been labelling everything and yes, I did label my labelmaker! But it said Organised Olivia rather than "labelmaker". I didn't know what to do with the sticker once I'd printed it!

Anyway, thought I'd say hello. Hope you're having a good Monday

Welcome to the board. It...

Welcome to the board. It would be interesting to hear what is stopping you from implementing GTD for yourself? I know, from my experience, that it is difficult to put a system in place and trust it from the start. I spent a good deal of time just writing down my todos in contexts, trying to separate out 'processing' from 'doing', attempting to organise my email better and so on. It was only after I saw how everything fitted together that I felt I could start in earnest. Having said that, I am still not fully commited. For example, I still need to understand how to manage longer term projects with GTD.

But GTD is no panacea. If you are about to embark on a new career path then perhaps now might not be the best time to change your working practices. Or maybe it is the perfect time? I don't know :) Certainly a good spring clean and some fanatical labelling might be useful (and fun).

David

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.
