Re-reverting to Palm

Hi,

I've just returned to using a Palm for my diary, contacts, to-do, notes etc. I had been using an A5 filofax (liked the freedom of scribbling on paper and the ability to store loose bits of paper).

I find the Palm much handier, as it's smaller to carry around and syncs with Outlook etc. I'm also able to sync Outlook with Airset, so I have triple backup!

I covered the lack of paper to scribble on by getting a tiny notebook (Bloc Rhodia No 11)- almost exactly the same size as my Palm.

I think an electronic system encourages you to get incoming items into a suitable place (phone no into contacts, appointment into diary etc), which can be a boost to efficiency. Paper systems allow more flexible input, but in a way they encourage building up a backlog of things not yet dealt with.

At least that's my experience...what's yours

I was listening to a...

I was listening to a Jason Womack podcast on the Personal Productivity Podcast yesterday (the podcast actually dates back a few weeks, I'm slow) and he was talking about the 'right tool for the job' concept. I tend to think of my Palm as a read-only device. I love having it with me when I'm away from my computer because I can access my calendar, address book, miscellaneous memos (e.g., what books am I missing from my stupendous sci fi collection). I also like having my lists of NAs, even though I don't tend to do much on them when I'm away from the computer, but I do take the opportunity to do mini-reviews. It's also a great way to kill time, either by playing sudoku, or reading a book.

On the other hand, the Palm basically sucks for input. I hate Graffiti, especially the newer version. (For example, I'm having a hard time training myself to write an 'L' and then a space in just the right way - I keep getting 't'. But I digress.) Anyway, I'm almost never actually input anything into my calendar/to do list/memo. Instead, I use the Notepad functionality - it's just like having a sticky note - about the same size, and I just scribble my thought. Then, when I get back to the computer, I check those sticky notes as another inbox. It works great for me. I do sometimes envy those people that have eschewed the electronic PDA and just use paper, be it notebook or index cards. I would love to just write quick little notes all the time. But I can't see giving up my Palm as my reference/calendar, etc.

I guess it just comes down to the fact that I use it more for output than input, so it works for me.

Cranking

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
