Recommendations for External Drive Enclosure
Frank | Oct 10 2007
I've been setting up a backup regime similar to this one, involving nightly Anyway, I picked up a couple of WD2500JS drives (which System Profiler says is what is in my iMac) and a couple of super-cheap KingWin drive enclosures. The problem I'm running into is that the external drive never goes to sleep (a really good way to wear out the backup drive before the primary one is to keep it spinning 24/7/365). So I'm looking for a good external 3.5" SATA drive enclosure that will go to sleep when my Mac does. 2 Comments

I have an external case from Newer Technologies (miniStack v2) using a PATA hard disk. When attached to my Mac via FireWire the drive will go to sleep. It won't go to sleep when connected via USB 2.0. Some USB 2.0 drives go to sleep but I haven't spent the time to research why some do and some don't. In my experience, all external FireWire drives will go to sleep. Newer Tech has external cases which support SATA drives. » POSTED IN:
