Luggage Pr0n: Five Head-Turning Bags for Your Notebook

Transitions can be a bitch. I’ve just traded in my big black Sony Vaio tower for a slim silver MacBook Pro not-laptop (because it runs so hot). On the one hand, I’ve said good-bye to a 750Gb RAID drive and a dual-monitor video card capable of running two 30-inch Cinema Displays. On the other hand, I’ve also said good-bye to daily virus updates and the constant fear that my entire system is going to become unstable and turn into a Russian Zombieputer overnight and start to spam myself about how small my penis is.

Now, I can carry my digital world around with me. Convenient, sure, but also it presents a quandary to a homosexualist like myself. Pardon me if I seem cliched and stereotypical, but it’s important for me to try to look good no matter what I’m doing, and that goes for my computer, too. If I’m going to be hauling my notebook into the latest trendy coffee shop and stare at my 15” glossy LED-lit screen as I sip a latte and nosh a bagel, I need it to look good not just sitting there glowing softly, but also look great coming and going.

If you’ve just dropped two-and-a-half large on a little folding computing wonder, doesn’t it make sense to spend a goodly amount on a bag that can contain that investment in style, and allow you to cram your other digital toys in as well? And how do you balance style and practicality? Sure, a fat backpack with a cable-out for your earpods is serviceable, but what does it say about you? Do you want to look like you’re off to day camp, or do you want your bag to say “look at me! I’m sexxay! I’m stylish! I’m capable of dressing myself without looking like a pile of rags in the corner!”

If you don’t want to look like everyone else in the coffee boutique, here’s my short list of laptop bags that will cost you plenty of hard-earned disposable income, and make you look good doing it.

1. The Isaburo City123 Rucksack $699.00 - $799.00

Let’s start at the top, shall we? Let’s shall! Pretend you’re a globe-hopper and fashion victim. (I said “pretend.”) and you regularly visit Herzog & de Meuron’s Prada store in Tokyo. You’re not entirely satisfied with this season’s shoe choices and now you have $700 burning a hole in your pocket. Poor you, what are you going to do?

Well if you’re me, you take a short walk around the corner to Isaburo, the 120-year-old leather goods manufacturer that insists on using only the best materials and workmanship and you plunk down your AmEx black card and ask for a one-of-a-kind, made-to-order City123 Rucksack. The shape is the same for everyone, a kind of smooth turtle built from a hard PVC shell, then coated in luxurious buttery leather in your choice of color and texture. Every City123 is made to order for you and takes a month to manufacture.

Now let’s say you don’t think you’ll be ending up in Tokyo any time soon, but you’re already salivating about getting your mitts on one of these gorgeous and slightly weird-looking oddities. Now you can! What you can’t get is any color you want — the online version only comes in “signature” dark red. For $100 more, you can get a premium skin like “silver snake” or “black crocodile.” But dollars to donuts, you’ll be the only one in your coffee klatch with one.

2. Takumi Shimamura’s Monacca Bag $280 - $325

When you want to talk drool-worthy, you’re talking this green-friendly wooden briefcase, available in the U.S. at the Museum of Modern Art store. I must confess that I personally own the original version of this bag, made of Japanese cedar that’s hand-molded into its soft-corner shape, then lined with canvas. Its leather handles are smooth and creamy and the new version has been improved with a shoulder strap.

It’s sized to fit laptops up to 17”, so even those of you who think size matters can fit your big-ass notebooks inside. What it doesn’t have is a secure way of making sure your laptop doesn’t bang around inside it — not that you’re apt to be throwing this in the overhead, anyway, perchance to mar its beautiful surface. Still, I suggest accompanying your purchase with a Foofbag from our Australian friends at Foof. In keeping with the Japanese flavor of the Monacca, order the Origami Kuro model, made with Japanese cotton and resembling a kimono. Take it from me, you don’t want to pull a fluffy pink computer out of this sleek case.

3. Jack Spade Nylon Canvas Tech Field Bag $185.00

Let’s take a trip away from Japan and see what’s available on our own shores. Jack Spade doesn’t really exist, did you know that? Kate totally made him up. I used to think it was her husband or something, but no — just another marketing figment. But so what? Does the fact that Tony the Tiger is a faux kitty make Frosted Flakes any less awesome?

The Nylon Canvas Tech Field Bag has a name that’s far too long. Basically, it’s a messenger bag, but it’s built for “today’s modern man,” and that’s you, believe it or not! Our first two candidates may scream style, but this bag screams “Substance!” It’s a basic messenger bag, to be sure, but it adds a few nice perks to the mix, namely an exterior zippered pocket for your cell- or iPhone, ample interior pockets for books, magazines, hair extensions and the like, plus a removable padded laptop sleeve with its own Velcro fastener, so if you need to travel light but protect your data, just take the sleeve and leave the bag! I promise, no one will laugh at you.

4. Mandarina Duck ‘File’ Briefcase $375.00 - $695.00

If you’re a label whore, as well as a bag slut, it’s hard to better impress your fellow label-bag whore-sluts than to whip out a piece of lux Mandarina Duck. Basically, if you want those who pay attention to such things to be salivating over your shoulder holder, buy some Duck. A Mandarina Duck bag of any sort is 100% guaranteed, so if anything ever happens to your beauty just bring it back and they’ll get it fixed, repairing zippers and reattaching handles at no cost. Sure, they may have to send it back to Italy, where the Duck makes its home, but aren’t you worth the extra effort?

The File series is new to MD, and as usual you can kit yourself out completely in an entire line of matching File gear, from carry-ons to trolleys to wallets and dopp bags. One thing that this bag has over almost every other bag here is that you can get a 17” bag to fit those extra-large, extra-heavy, extra-impressive ginormous notebooks that some of you think you need, even though you only discover you don’t when you plug an external monitor into it and make that extra-big screen kind of superfluous.

Lest you think this is a bag about beauty over brawn, let it be known that practicality has not been cast aside. File briefcases come with removable cable pockets and separate document compartments in addition to the necessary padded laptop area. And you can pick from black or brown — or, in a select few cases, a high-tech orange (a hue which they call “Brandy”) that’ll make you really stand out in a crowd.

5. Oakley S.I. Computer Bag $175.00

“But what about me?” I hear you saying. “I’m not some mamby-pamby girly-man looking for fashion. I need to look tough! I need to look rugged! And, dammit, I need pockets!” Oakley hears you, even if I scoff and roll me eyes. This Oakley bag defines “overcompensate” by attaching three little “removable pouch pockets” to its exterior, in addition to myriad internal storage pockets, a padded computer pouch, daisy chain webbing (yeah, me neither), side compression straps and a custom D-ring from which, one assumes, one may hang a length of chain attached to one’s wallet.

As if all that ain’t macho enough for you, listen to the name of its color: New Kalki! Why settle for old kalki when New Kalki awaits, all soldierrific? I know I’m erect.

Oh, I kid because I love. Having seen one of these in person in my trendy fashion-conscious ‘hood, I can attest that it is something to behold. Nobody but nobody will be accusing you of being unprepared if you’re bearing one of these babies around, and think of the fun toys you can stash in those side pockets! It’s a party on your shoulder!

And there you have it! Five guaranteed stylish, selective and unique solutions to your… er… my laptop dilemma. Look for me in your corner coffee shop. I’ll be the guy getting my case luggage felt up.

It's not really a laptop bag....

But it sounds like it would work. I am not sure I have seen a bag that has made me more lustful. It's the the briefcases made by Saddleback Leather. I saw this first at arstechnica.com, and I found that the-gadgeteer.com has a review of one.

Unfortunately I don't actually own one, so I can't speak for it first hand.

Saddleback Leather Company

Despite my efforts to resist it, I bought a Carbon Black 16” bag from Saddleback Leather Company about two months ago. While they make some amazing claims about the luggage on their site, it is even better than advertised.

How good is it? My significant other found their prices objectionable and complained enough to keep me from ordering a briefcase/backpack (it can convert from a soft briefcase to a backpack) for about three weeks. Then, as luck would have it, my ballistic nylon case mysteriously died and I had to find something to replace it (OK - I admit it…I intentionally ran over it with my car after letting my boxer drag it around the back yard for a few hours just to justify buying the SLC case). Of course, she complained even more after I ordered it.

Anyway, the bag showed up a few days later and was not out of the box for more than five minutes when she marched over and gave it a full inspection (surely trying to find something to use against me). Upon realizing it was on the verge of bulletproof, she fired up her laptop to order one for herself (even though she knew that amounted to giving me a free pass to harass her about it until the end of time). In lieu of counter-nagging her about it, I have remained silent. Why? I am devising a scheme to get a SLC three-piece luggage set while she isn’t looking. The 3-piece SLC luggage set is around $3k so she will probably throw a toaster into the bathtub with me if she finds out but I figure it is worth the risk.

Saddleback Bags

Just a comment on the Saddleback bags. I am also something of a bag hound and have had some of the very best English handmade bags to everything in-between. I did order the Saddleback bag, buying into the incredible hype on the website but I found the bags very poorly made with uneven stitching, thin leather in spots that could tear, a cut strap, misaligned rivets, poor hardware, and just sloppy workmanship. The owner makes one believe that they are individually handmade by a master craftsman but it appears that they are semi mass produced in Mexico. The leather quality itself it nice but I could not recommend the bags. Buyer beware, IMO.

Really?

Wow, we’ve had significantly different Saddleback experiences. If I have any complaints at all about my 16” bag (I don’t really have any complaints, but for the sake of argument…) it’s that it’s over-engineered. There is nothing “on the cheap” at all about the bag I carry. Sucks that your bag wasn’t of similar quality — that’s a lot to spend on a bag you’re not happy with. I assume you returned it?

Note to those thinking of buying: The light tobacco color shown online is not as light as it appears (thank God). It’s definitely on the brown side. YMMV, of course, as each bag is unique, but that’s been my experience.

Saddlebag vs. Dubov

HI,

I’ve been following the Saddleback leather thread for a while without joining 43 folders. Today I did because after reading what everyone had to say, decided to look other brands with similar products. Finally, I ran across a bag with very similar design as Saddleback, made of the same material, lined with pig leather instead of suede and priced at $350. The maker is an Israeli leather craftsman who brands his products “Dubov.” After reading the threads, I really didn’t feel like gambling on a $500 purchase with Saddleback, so I’m pretty close to buying this Dubov bag. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150205963094&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting

The thing is, I’m pretty fastidious about research and while Yuri, the dude who sells them on ebay, has been pretty cool about answering impertinent questions (like: what is the difference between your bags and saddleback), I can’t find anyone who has posted a review or who even mentions the company online. Does ANYONE have ANY info on this company, I’m about to spend the dough but would love some info. Thanks

What no backpacks?

Having lugged my desktop replacement laptop all over the country (and down to Starbucks) I must use a backpack. Get the Northface Surge. It holds everything, and is the most comfortable backpack I’ve ever used. The heck with style - I just want to be comfortable when I have to lug it a long ways.

How about a Waterfield Cosmo from SF Bags

Comes with a cool protective sleeve, holds the laptop securely, made in the USA and …..

with the money you save you can buy a small island!

More of an outdoor bag, but versatile

I have been using Patagonia's Critical Mass Bag for my daily/travel bag. It's big enough to put everything you could need in there, as well as acting as a overnighter. It's also great if you bike to work. www.patagonia.com

Best Bag Ever

Even with your suggestions I believe the best bag is this this one: http://www.stmbags.com.au/medium-cargo-specifications.html

I bought this guy from the mac store for my MBP 15” about a year ago and it’s been fantastic. I tighten up the straps and use it as a messenger bag when I am biking and loosen up the straps for walking around. Also the inner bag is perfect for transporting my precious around home or work. The materials are great and weatherproof. It’s the most comfortable and reliable bag I have ever owned.

Also a while back I got bike grease on it. I though it was fine but my wife wanted me to clean it. Well cleaning it bleached my bag’s dye. I emailed STM and they replaced it for FREE!

Anyway if your looking for a bag you should seriously consider STM.

Oakley S.I. Computer Bag

None of them are really of my type but if I’ve to choose, then it would be the Oakley S.I. Computer Bag. Btw, I felt like digging it, so here it is

You're not even trying ...

… are you? The coolest bag has to be the Brenthaven Metrolite Black - black balistic nylon, very slim, padded to protect your laptop - but also holds the perfect rectangular shape without any sagging. You can just about get your laptop into the padded interior compartment. There’s a cod-piece shaped pouch on one side for you to try to squeeze your power supply but that’s about it. Perfect form - minimal function - a metrosexual’s dream …

anybody tried the timbuk2 hacker bag?

i read about this bag somewhere, it converts to a backpack from a shoulder bag from a briefcase style. i love the looks of the northface, but it’s just a backpack (and i ride a bike w/ my MBP too), i like the looks of the stm bag, but it’s a bit sterile for me. i LOVE the brenhaven, but it’s only a briefcase style.

Well, there are laptop bags....

... and then there are bags from http://www.moolight.com. Not just good looking, but extra credit for being made out real leather which just makes them age gracefully...

Luggage for the global digerati

STM have some of the best bags I’ve seen, albeit not the trendiest. Over the last seven years, mine has been to work every day, sat in bars most nights, lived on three continents, and circumnavigated the globe several times. It’s a little dirtier than when I bought it, but that’s about the extent of damage it shows.

Go Aussie!

Great Bag for 17"

After I got my MacBook Pro I went looking for a bag and this is the one settled on, the Vyper exo XL

Great bag with great protection and it looks sexy!

If you can get WiFi on a Fourteener....

If you live in Colorado, particularly if you hang around Boulder, your gear bag has to look like you’re ready to climb a “Fourteener”… which is ridiculous, since I can only think of one fourteen thousand foot peak that might have WiFi at the top.

Never the less, the North Face “Surge” backpack worked well for me on a three week trip to Japan, including the bullet train portions of the trip where it was my only luggage for several days at a time. Many compartments and organizers, including a padded laptop compartment, and another compartment just for your recharger.

http://www.thenorthface.com/opencms/opencms/tnf/gear.jsp?site=NA&model=AE5T

I bought mine at the REI flagship store in Denver (a destination in itself, occupying what used to be an old steam plant), but I’m sure you can find them online as well.

Instead of nr. 3, I highly recommend the ultra-cool freitag-messenger-bags over at http://www.freitag.ch - they even have some shops in the US.

I have one since 10 years now and i am highly impressed with the quality.

Re: Luggage Pr0n: Five Head-Turning Bags for Your Notebook

Personally, I go for these bags:

http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/index.php?catId=5

The advertising is odd, but they are amazingly sturdy, and the warranty is fantastic, and having seen how much abuse various bags have gone through … they’re very, very sturdy.

Boblbee - ergonomic & comfy back & gear protection

Hollywood has gone gaga over these bags (seen on Charlie's Angels - but bear with me), but they really are the best laptop bag (backpack) that I've ever had. Sure, they look a little out of this world, but you can carry TONS of gear without wearing yourself out. And for those of us who prefer two-wheeled transportation, they're now a CE certified back protector.
I can't say enough about these bags. Boblbee

SFBags - RacerX

One of my favorite all time bags. Used more than any other and Gary at SFBags is a great guy with an outstanding sense of customer service. The Cosmo mentioned above is a good bag, but I love my Racer-X with the Mtn Bike Grip handle. http://www.sfbags.com/products/racerx/racerx.htm

PinkSamurai's picture

Twisting this thread to my own purposes...

These are great, but they seem to fall into two categories: sexy messenger bags or cargo-focused backpacks. Is there a happy medium? I love the shoulder bag I have for my 15” MBP, but carting it around all day with companion books, papers, etc. results in a sore shoulder. Using a backpack is preferable in this regard, but does any one know of a stylish one? Mine is ug-ly and I hate showing up to meetings feeling like I’m packed up for gradeshool.

Convertible backpacks

I’d like to second the earlier comment re Moolight (www.moolight.com) - they also carry one model that converts from messenger style to backpack. Suede in a number of colors. I think they’ve also started selling in the US now.

Tom Bihn's bags are awesome

I have to heartily second the recommendation for laptop bags from Tom Bihn. The fit is fantastic (custom-sized laptop sleeves), the build quality is top-notch, and the customer service is the best that I have ever seen.

There is a small community in their forums of satisfied customers, and they share tips, ideas, and requests. If you have questions, someone from their staff monitors the forums, and you'll usually get a response within one business day (oftentimes within a few hours).

Here's a link to all of their bags designed with laptops in mind:

If you're looking for a briefcase-style bag,
consider the Empire Builder:
http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0730

If you're looking for a backpack that can hold everything,
consider the Brain Bag:
http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0104

If you're looking for a messenger bag,
consider the Ego:
http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0830

No, I don't work for them; I'm just an extremely satisfied customer. I have a Brain Bag and a Super Ego (larger than the regular Ego), and they are the best bags I've ever owned. I have a horizontal brain cell perfectly sized for my 13" MacBook that fits in both and it provides plenty of extra protection.

And did I mention the customer service? It's unbelievable. I just received a Christmas card from the company, along with a bag-related gift, and a cookie!

Brenthaven bags rock

I bought a Brenthaven back for my PowerBook 5 years ago at MacWorld Expo; it’s stylish and still going strong. I was brutal to bags and none lasted more than 6-12 months for me. This one has outlasted them all with hardly any wear. They make cool backpack versions as well as the over-the-shoulder style. They also have cooler slimmer ones in different colors. The best bags you can buy and they are worth it.

Re: Luggage Pr0n: Five Head-Turning Bags for Your Notebook

A just got a new laptop bag, the Zwei u12:

http://www.iam2.com/english/main.html

It fits a 13" MacBook, filofax, lunch and jacket with no trouble.

It has quite a few carrying options, including a kickflix connector, so it can be fitted onto the front of a bike.

I think it does a pretty god job of holding lots without looking bulky, which is quite a key quality in my book.

Beyond Basic Black - Brilliant Patterns at Lexie Barnes

My wife was tired of basic black laptop bags, so she got a Lexie Barnes Echo 13 with a brilliant green/pink/orange floral pattern (sized exactly for her 13” MacBook + accessories). There is quite a variety of patterns at the site (check out the black/white/pink “Baja” pattern with the tiny skulls nestled among the flowers). She’s selling off the 2007 models (sized for 13”, 14” and 17” MacBooks) at a discount right now if you, or anyone you are buying for, wants to really step away from the conventional look of a “laptop bag”:

Advice, please.

When it comes to the label on my laptop bag, I'm a legs-spread, spunk-slurping, bend-me-over-and-spank me, use-me-and-abuse-me, cracked-out, street-walking, Bangkok brothel WHORE!

On the other hand, with regard to the way my laptop bag looks, I'm a filthy, skanky, kneepad-wearing, bed-hopping, cum-crazed, ball-gargling slut!

What bag is best for me?
