The Merlin Show: Two JVs and more

Two JVs & a Nick

No, I haven’t yet interviewed Nick Mirov, but The Merlin Show’s launch week juggernaut rolls on with interviews featuring two “JV”s: Google’s Jeffrey Veen and San Francisco indie rock institution John Vanderslice (the latter of whom also has a show tonight at The Independent at which you should say hi if you see me). Clickable versions of both episodes provided after the jump.

Also, I’ve posted my first in a series of credit highlights, beginning with John Roderick, the man behind the wonderful music you hear over our credits (it’s called “Blue Diamonds” and you can download it here).

Finally, if you haven’t yet subscribed for free, it’s a great time to hop in. Also, kindly note that, if you subscribe via iTunes, you can help me potentially overtake several popular public radio shows. Which would be really cool.

Jeffrey Veen

John Vanderslice

Thanks Merlin. I enjoy all your content. Something to think about though - half the podcasts in my iTunes list start with “The” and yous is one of them.

Hi Merlin, Great show so far!...

Hi Merlin,

Great show so far! Only one request… you’re too productive! I can’t keep up with a new show every day. I find them useful and informative, so I don’t want to fall behind. Can we have one show a week?

Thanks!

Merlin, not sure where you stand on the US iTunes Podcast list, but you’re currently in second place on the Australian version.

I am one grateful MF for your having let me in on Vanderslice’s music. This is what is (fill in your current favorite adjective of praise) about the web in 2007.

I didn’t see any part of the rules that said I couldn’t help people find the hi-res version in iTunes:

Dearest Merlin! The last interview never made it to my ipod… the one with John Vanderslice showed up in my itunes as a dirty .mov file and my ipod doesnt like those and got really sad… and now I am sad… cause my powerbook is old.. and slow so now i convert it… so my ipod can play it again… the other episodes showed up just fine… is there another feed that I should use or this is all your fault and I should bring a stick…? Please make my ipod happy again.

Merlin, You are currently (11:08 ET) number 5 on the US Top Podcasts in iTunes. Only A Prairie Home Companion, This American Life, NPR: Fresh Air, and ESPN: PTI are ahead of you. And I don’t subsribe to any of them!

Love the interviews!

Merlin - Love the theme...

Merlin - Love the theme music for the “show” - everyone must do themselves a HUGE favor and pick up Long Winter’s latest release - “Putting the Days to Bed”. Fantastic record.

The John Vanderslice interview was great. It reminded of the classic article written by Steve Albini, legendary guitarist of Big Black, and producer of everyone from Cheap Trick to Nirvana. Albini’s article called The Problem With Music was written early in his career as a producer as he was seeing bands he produced being ravaged by the music industry. Though this article is dated, it breaks down into hard numbers how the chips are stacked against bands once they sign with a major.

Check it out…

I’m enjoying the show so far and looking forward to the rest of the episodes this week. The high-res video version takes a bit of finding though - maybe worth putting a direct link to it above? That might dilute the audience figures though I suppose. :)

Merlin - great show(s). I really enjoyed your interview with Vanderslice. I am not a huge-huge fan of his music, but damn the guy sounds really smart about the business. Thanks for asking really good questions, not the usual BS.

Veen is very tall, Pete, so we had to split his interview into a couple segments. :-)

I’m happy to say there’s more coming from everyone we’ve talked to so far. Coming soon!

Dear Mr Mann - Your recent endeavor into video-casting is spot-on and refreshing. I can’t wait until my Apple TV arrives so I can watch it regularly from my comfy couch. Get thee to SXSW this year; there are so many potentially interesting inteviews there. Back to your regularly scheduled captures.
