Roger von Oech's 'Creative Think' home page

Creative Think

Whack Roger von Oech has authored several enjoyable business creativity books like A Kick in the Seat of the Pants and Expect the Unexpected or You Won’t Find It.

Visit the home page for his Menlo Park consultancy, “Creative Think.” Reload for a new “Oblique Strategies“-like tip for enhanced creativity, problem solving clues, or what Roger has called “a whack on the side of the head.”

Here’s one I liked:

Drop an Assumption

Columbus challenged the Spanish courtiers to stand an egg on its end. They tried but failed. He then hard-boiled one and stood it on its end. “That’s not fair,” they protested, “you broke the rules.” “Don’t be silly,” he replied, “you just assumed more than you needed to.” What can you let go of? What unnecessary assumptions can you eliminate? How would that change the way you view your issue?

Smart move also to put free, useful, fun content on your business’s home page (instead of the usual “mission statement,” “best of breed” spiel). Very cool.

Looks like he’s incorporated his “Whack Pack” onto his front page. They’re an excellent tool that I find myself returning to in both my writing and in the marketing work that I do. The Creative Whack Pack is a very cool deck of cards that you can whip out whenever you need a new creative strategy to help you with what you are doing. Similar in ways to the “Oblique Strategies” but with more detail.

Plus its also interesting how the timeline for Whack and Oblique are similar and were, I’m sure, developed very independently from each other. von Oech first published “A Whack on the Side of the Head” in 83, about the same time that Eno & Schmidt were coming up with their cards. I’m always fascinated by how people can come up with similiar findings and ideas simultaneously yet unbeknownst to each other.

Thanks, Crystal. That’s what I’d thought.

I received the “Whack Pack” as a gift a few years back but hadn’t looked at it too much. For some reason, I sort of like the web site better, I think.

Dear Mr.Roger von Oech: I read your book”A Whack on the side of the head”. I found it so interesting that I thought I should commend you.In fact I wrote a letter a few weeks back, but then I did not get any reply from you, although I had given my email address —cadhayam@yahoo.com. Yes, I am inspired by the book and I am sure my creativity will reach a higher level.Regards.V.Sampath

If there is a chance to buy the cards in German again, please let me know. I also would like to join a creative seminar. Can I get informations about this? Thanks and kind regards from Germany Ria Hinzmann
