Mail Act-On: Invoke Mail.app rules with custom commands

Mail Act-On 1.3 - Key Stroke Plugin for Apple Mail.App

If you’re using Tiger and Mail.app, you need to have a look at Mail Act-On, a free plugin developed by Scott Morrison and Jonathan Paisley that lets you assign keyboard commands that are bound to custom “Rules” you set in your Preferences. This is (very cleverly) accomplished by naming the rule according to the CTRL key you want to assign to it.

A simple, but elegant application I use constantly—I’ve created a rule called “Act-On: a | Archive” with this basic logic:

  • Move Message to: archived
  • Mark as Read
  • Stop evaluating rules

So I can select a bunch of already-read messages in my inbox, hit CTRL-a, and it silently shunts the old mail off to the archive without dragging. Done.

Scott points out that—with a logical mind and a bit of creativity—you can do all sorts of cool tricks—including using the same key for different commands based on context. My favorite trick is to just hit “`” (reassignable to the meta key of your choice), which brings up a bezel showing all possible commands for the selected messages.

If you were a fan of Aaron’s “Mail.app Mutt Scripts” for Panther, you should definitely check out Mail Act-On. Really wonderful little plugin and a huge time-saver.

[...] If you’ve never seen...

[…] If you’ve never seen it before, Mail Act-On is a very clever Mail.app plugin that lets you create key commands that execute Rules you’ve generated in your Preferences. Sounds pretty dull, right? Absolutely. Until you start putting this stuff into action and learn how painfully slow all that draggy mc drag drag business is. Here’s how I’ve set mine up. […]

Just want to add and...

Just want to add and acknowledge that Jonathan Paisley also merits a lot of credit here too. In open source spirit, he started collaborating and strengthening the code early on in the process.

We are working on a new version that will also allow adding comments and other metadata tags to messages (such as project, tickle date) We are a good deal of the way there and hope to have something ready soon.

If you are using Linux,...

If you are using Linux, you can do this in KMail (and the PIM which uses KMail, Kontact). Use “Settings, Configure Filters” and assign a keyboard shortcut to any filter you create (which can have as many rules and actions as you want). Spiffy!

Thank GOD -- the ability...

Thank GOD — the ability to bind AppleScripts to command keys was broken in the upgrade to Tiger 2.0. There’s been nary an acknowledgement, much less a fix, by Apple, so this is perfect!

Evan - sweet! I need...

Evan - sweet! I need to remember that when I put together my linux box in a few days.

I really like this plug-in, but it would be nice if there were a way to bind the manual execution of a filter to the undo command. In other words, if I accidentally hit the wrong thing and move it to another folder, I can’t just command-z to undo the action.
