Open Thread: How are you using Excel?

Yesterday, I mentioned I'd been talking with someone who's looking at interesting things people are doing with Microsoft Excel. I talked to her again yesterday, and with her official okey-dokey, I'll virtually introduce Tralee Pearce (*waves*), a reporter from Toronto's Globe & Mail whom you might remember from a very swell article about the Hipster PDA.

So, by request -- and to help Tralee with fleshing out her fun-sounding article -- I hope you all will jump in here: What kind of cool, novel, and non-obvious stuff are you doing with Excel? What's the wildest, most obsessive, most nerdy thing you ever saw someone do with our favorite spreadsheet program?

I use Excel for a few things around the house - mainly the grocery list and our weekly menu. The grocery list is pre-filled with the items we use regularly, and it's laid out like a map of the grocery store. A hard copy hangs in the kitchen; as we run out of items or someone has a special request, it gets checked on the list. At the end of the week, I grab the list and the kids, and we go to the store. Shopping is quick, as we just follow the list through the store. It's so simple, even the husband can do the shopping.

I also create a weekly menu plan/weekly calendar. This GREATLY simplifies meal prep. On Saturday, the kids and I sit down, review upoming events and appointments, and decide what we're going to eat for dinner each night the following week. Next, we check to see what we have in stock and what we need to add to the grocery list. Throughout the week, there is NO need to fret about what's for dinner.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
