Favorite Windows email tricks and plugins

I'm working on an article about email tricks for one of your finer magazines, and -- as you might imagine -- when it comes to the inevitable Windows stuff, I'm a bit light in the useful tips department. So, I turn to you Redmond-using smarties for help.

Do you have a favorite application, plugin, trick, or hack for bending Windows email to your will? Double-credit for Outlook add-ons that garden-variety users can install without fancy root-style access. Whence comes your magic Windows fu?

In Thunderbird I have set...

In Thunderbird I have set up an "Active Projects" folder that then contains a folder for each ongoing project. To compensate for the two-level nesting, I also have a saved search folder called "Recent Active Projects" that returns all the contents of those folders from the past few days, sorted chronologically. This is the fast way to find yesterday's email without drilling down through the project folders.

This setup means there's no excuse for leaving an email in the Inbox once I've either acted on it or determined that it doesn't require action. Any reference material gets sent to its project folder or to another non-project archive as quickly as possible.

All completed project folders get sent to a "Project Archive" folder.

I hate digging through the Sent folder, so I have another saved search folder that tracks my sent mail for the past three days, and another few client-specific saved searches.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
