Vox Pop: What's your "Mac Whine?"

We've started a new feature over on MacBreak Weekly that I really hope becomes a regular thing: "_Mac Whines_!"

Yeah, sure, I'm an unapologetic Apple fanboy (I, mean duh), but some stuff about my Mac experience makes me crazy. Have you got a beef with your Mac or OS X you want to shout from the shiny counter of the "Genius" Bar? Yeah, me too.

I'll open with:

  • inexplicable iCal "snooze" options (per MBW 30 -- which, incidentally, may also be my favorite MacBreak Weekly to date)
  • near-hangs whenever a mounted network volume is no longer available
  • no way to (temporarily) enable password-free user switching
  • The Finder. The goddamned Finder.

What's your Mac Whine?

"But Windows users who send...

"But Windows users who send me a WMV instead of an MPEG, or a PPT instead of a PDF, or an XLS instead of a CSV/ODS, will be mercilessly whined at!"

Unfortunately, that's most of my friends - and it's not their fault. They get sent somethign funny, and they're trying to pass it along. MS hasn't updated WMP in years, so that's on them -- but as the minority platform, Apple has to take the lead on supporting it's customers in stuff like that.

My bigger gripe though, is that for all of Apple's focus on media (FCP, Logic, iLife) they really seem to have dropped the ball on playback and enduser experience from where I sit. It's most disappointing that tis is an area where they formerly RULED mercilessly, and now they seem sort of uninterested in keeping Quicktime player up with the resto of the world.

Plus - if most of the codecs we're talking about are free on the net, how would their inclusion into quicktime be a cost Apple had to pass on to consumers?

Cranking

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
