Vox Pop: What's your "Mac Whine?"

We've started a new feature over on MacBreak Weekly that I really hope becomes a regular thing: "_Mac Whines_!"

Yeah, sure, I'm an unapologetic Apple fanboy (I, mean duh), but some stuff about my Mac experience makes me crazy. Have you got a beef with your Mac or OS X you want to shout from the shiny counter of the "Genius" Bar? Yeah, me too.

I'll open with:

  • inexplicable iCal "snooze" options (per MBW 30 -- which, incidentally, may also be my favorite MacBreak Weekly to date)
  • near-hangs whenever a mounted network volume is no longer available
  • no way to (temporarily) enable password-free user switching
  • The Finder. The goddamned Finder.

What's your Mac Whine?

I second the gripes about...

I second the gripes about hangs on network unavailability, and reading bad removable media.

I also VERY STRONGLY agree that Dashboard is way too slow to come up. Nobody in my family uses it because of this, and so, why are their computers burning RAM and CPU cycles even running the darn thing?

But my MAIN Mac Gripes: 1. Domain Policies (or equivalent). There's a slashdot article on how Macs are slowly gaining a little marketshare in businesses. How would I manage an enterprise of these? How could I push down a security policy from a centralized server? Some of my customers might actually consider Macs, if there was a reliable way to secure them in the enterprise (as opposed to an ad-hoc method of shell commands and hidden plist settings to lock down a Mac).

  1. Outlook support. 'nuff said. That's not Apple's job. It's Microsoft's job. Entourage is a disgrace.

  2. For my home network of Macs: a very cheap, always-on, file server so we can share iTunes libraries, calendars, etc. without paying the monthly dotMac tax, or without leaving my large, noisy, energy-hog G5 "always-on". Oh, and while you're at it, Steve - how about a freaking HD-DVD or Blu Ray player for AppleTV? Someone was not thinking there. . . you could have replaced everyone's settop DVD player. Look at the huge number of kids who bought PS/2's just so they'd have a DVD player. (and bonus: games too).

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
