Critical reasoning skills -- for me, these are higher on the list than anything else here. Kids need to learn how to listen to an argument, figure out its hidden assumptions and the implications to which it leads, and the evidence needed to support it. When offered two competing viewpoints, they need to know what questions to ask in order to compare them, and how to follow up on the answers to those questions. This can't be one-time "logic" course. It has to be practiced and reinforced in every one of their academic subjects until it's habitual. Once you have this skill, you can learn anything else you need. » POSTED IN:
