MBW 58; Pick of the week is Acorn

MacBreak Weekly 58: Repeal the Nerd Tax

Hosts: Leo Laporte, Merlin Mann, Alex Lindsay, and Chris Breen

Chris reviews the new iPods, screen issues with the Touch, and the trouble with ringtones…

Here’s a direct MP3 download of MBW 58.

Oh, brother, I was totally high on cold medicine when we did this episode. But, not so high that I couldn’t recommend Flying Meat’s amazing new Acorn, a stripped-down, and very inexpensive graphics app. It’s one my favorite Mac programs of the year.

Fiddlin' with the “Lovely Glow Effect”

Like I said on the show, there’s so many little things you want to do with screen shots or photos — just weird little tweaks like Dooce’s “Lovely Glow Effect” — and high-end graphics apps like Photoshop can seem really heavy for the job. Acorn is in the sweet spot for most of what I want to do, and so far it’s stood up to every task I’ve needed. And, the price is sure right at an intro rate of $39.95 (0.057 of an “Alex”).

And, for the next show, I’ll try to be less medicated. I promise. Unless it’s something people like. In which case I’ll consider getting wasted. Up to you.

Photoshop who?

Between Acorn, Pixelmator, and (un-released) Iris, is something in the water? Ah yes, CoreImage.

Merlin, have you played with Pixelmator? Are they comparable?

Y’know, I haven’t but I hear good things. Will have a look-see.

And see soon, you shall.

Apparently Pixelmator just went 1.0 today!

Acorn vs. GraphicConverter?

I’m intrigued by Acorn. I’m curious about how it stacks up vs. my old standby “poor man’s Photoshop,” GraphicConverter. Is there someone out there who’s used both who can give me some educated feedback?

Give 'er a spin

Acorn is a free DL (links to a ZIP) to demo, so you might want to give it a try and compare for yourself.

I used to love GC, but I haven’t used it in a dog’s age.

cold medication

i feel bogged down by my lingering cold caught on a horrific 10hour flight from jolly ol’ England, and my lengthy trysts with PS. I’ve tried numerous image apps and all have lasted under a day without getting zapped. take that you crappy app!

Thanks for the Acorn recommendation. Will give it a go.

PS. new site is totally boo-yah!

An “alex”? Did I miss a

An “alex”? Did I miss a memo? My google-fu fails me: what is this alex of which you speak?

codykniffen's picture

it's a monetary value...

An “alex” is a monetary value that is equal to $700 USD invented by Mr. Alex Lindsay of the PixelCorps. His “picks” on MBW were originally very high-priced.

Take the price of something and divide by 700 to find out how much percent of an “alex” your item is worth.

A 16 GiB iPod touch for example is 0.57 of an “alex”.

Jinx.
