Inbox Zero
Johnny Baker | Oct 2 2007
I just watched the Inbox Zero video, and I REALLY want to start implementing processing. My question regards on-going conversations or responses. Do you suggest deleting or archiving each response as they come in, or waiting until the final email comes in and hold on to that one? Ok, not sure that makes sense, but I’m thinking about email “trees” where a conversation happens via email. Thoughts? 3 Comments

Oh, man, this is SO hard. I get smoked with this question every time I speak, and it’s a great question. Depending on how often you’re expected to respond, one suggestion would be to let these messages accumulate in a folder that you check every day or so (whatever works for you) then pass through a whole bunch of the conversation at once. My main suggestion — unless you absolutely have to, don’t let every new bit of the conversation interrupt you from other work, you know? That’s a killer. » POSTED IN:
I think I'm starting to get itSubmitted by JohnnyB on October 2, 2007 - 6:14pm.
So, it’s more about how often I engage in processing email then the ultimate fate of each one? Hmm, I’m liking this. It’s going to take some self control to stop living with Mail open, but I think I can get used to it. » POSTED IN:
email tickler fileSubmitted by sisyphea on October 31, 2007 - 8:22pm.
I’ve struggled with this too. I started off archiving them, but now I’m putting them into an email tickler file that I check as part of the weekly review. The important thing is that any related tasks go into your task list, so that they aren’t ‘unprocessed’ or ‘procrastination’ files, but simply conversations-in-progress. Only the latest from each conversation should be in the file, archive the previous one, so that it doesn’t get overloaded. I’m thinking about incorporating some kind of a contact group/note into the weekly review somehow that includes contacts that I need to keep in touch with - long-distance, online friends who I only email occasionally - so that they don’t fall off the orbat. About JohnnyBBio Johnny is a fanboy. An un-organized one, but a fanboy never the less. He loves Mac (he’s new to the Mac universe, but he’s sold out) and if the MacBreak guys say he should buy something, or download something, or look at something or…you get the idea, he does. Johnny works at a place called Saddleback Church and is trying to bring many of the people there kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Oh, Johnny’s wife wants you to know that he loves her very much and his daughters say they’re awesome. Which he does and they are. |
