Address book, ipod touch and groups

I’ve just acquired an iPod touch and I’m in love.

One small issue, though. I’ve added a bundle of addresses in the past few weeks using the touch, but only yesterday did I realise that they could be placed in groups if you were IN the group already when you started adding the new entry. So there’s a whole load of ungrouped entries in my (frighteningly big) address book.

The logical thing would be to make a smart group for stuff that, say, isn’t in a dumb group. But I couldn’t see a smart group option for that. Any bright ideas?

Macworld has it figured out

A quick way to see which contacts are ungrouped can be found here.

Translated to your needs, it goes like this:

1. Make an empty group named "Ungrouped"
2. Select all of your contacts and drag them to Ungrouped.
3. Click on one of your groups (other than Ungrouped) and select all of its contacts.
4. Click on Ungrouped again and press the tab key to move into the name field.
5. Hit delete and select "Remove From Group."
6. Repeat steps 3-5 for all groups other than Ungrouped.

What this does is select the contacts in Ungrouped that are also members of other groups and deletes them from the group.
