While I haven’t used this model, I am on the market for a decent all-in-one monochrome duplex laser.

Without having a chance to have used this, it appears to be a $400 duplex scanner, apparently with a really seamless software Fujistu makes that allows for the scans to be automatically batched into “searchable PDFs” (as opposed to non-searchable PDFs?)

NYT claims there’s a $300 “consumer” version, but I couldn’t find one on Amazon below $400, and the article didn’t mention the difference between the two.

If it’s not proprietary driver stuff leading the actual batch PDF workflow, can’t a $300-$400 duplex all-in-one laser w/ an auto-feed scan tray do just as well, given the right software?

I’m running Vista on my Mac using Parallels— if I have to resort to using PC software for decent scanning solution, it’s the difference of switching windows, and sharing the folder for scanned PDFs in spotlight. No biggie.

For those of us without $400 to throw down on a standalone scanner, but wouldn’t mind archiving documents and self-disintegrating receipts, is there any compromise option in the all-in-one market?

I can’t imagine Fujistu has a monopoly on batch PDF software, and it’s tough to justify buying a standalone when I still need a laser printer and copier as well.

It sounds like 90% of its functionality is software-based, so why would one need to purchase a replacement if you can discover comparable software that achieves the same task? (Again, enlighten me— I am unfamiliar with this product).

Also, could someone explain the difference between auto and manual duplex, and what it means in real terms for how I can use a printer?

If an all-in-one laser claims it does duplex printing, is it safe to assume it does duplex scanning?
