Lifehacker: Canadian Press Secretary on his HPDA

How I get stuff done: Press Secretary : Lifehacker:

Gina talks with Ian Capstick, who coordinates complex press interactions for NDP party MPs using a favorite tool of ours.

Your one can’t-live-without web site, software app, gadget or tool?

My “hipster PDA”, as mentioned on the blog 43 Folders. I am a convert to using these handy 3x5 index cards and bull clips. In the chaos of Parliament Hill the little cards keep the daily press interview requests, daily spin messages and grocery lists all handy and in my back pocket.

Thanks for the nice plug, Ian.

That's fantastic. HPDA now...

That's fantastic. HPDA now has an official government endorsement.

I've actually rigged a mini-HPDA with my pocket Moleskine. I keep a few cards held inside the front cover with a rubber band, placed toward the binding. If I have reminders or a to-do list, I take that card out of the stack and put it on the outside of the cover, held under the rubber band and the elastic strap. That way I can just pull it out of my pocket and see what needs to be done immediately.

It doesn't work well if you need more than five or six cards, but it's allowed me to turn my Moleskine into a pocket notebook, HPDA, and wallet.
