Text Expander for automagic typo correction

TextExpander AutoCorrect Snippet File

Recently, I was emailing with our friends over at Smile on My Mac about how I use Text Expander as an automatic spelling and typo corrector, and I realized that there wasn’t a canonical location for the user-created “snippets” file you need to import in order to get this feature working.

Jean and her elves not only set up this handy dandy page but also edited the heck out of the snippets source file (zip) — removing any entries that “step on” each other, as well as generally tidying things up.

If, like me, you’re a TE fan with fat fingers, this is a terrifically useful way of cleaning up after yourself.

Also, keep an eye out — we having an upcoming episode of Mac Break that’s all about Text Expander. I am a fan.

I use it for some...

I use it for some of the more common names in my novel which have characters not defined in my keyboard like Jana?ek and Rosický. Which I can obtain by typing without accents in lower case. What I have noticed is if I make an error in typing (say “rodicky”), then I sometimes need to erase all the way back to the beginning for text expander to realize that I did want it to intervene. Except when I try to do it on purpose.

I'd like to like TE,...

I’d like to like TE, but it can’t handle large snippet files. I have 1,000 snippets, and TE chokes. So, for now, I’m using TypeIt4Me; it zips along with my large file.

Hopefully Smile on My Mac will re-write their code to accommodate large snippet files, since I prefer the flexibility of TE with capital letters.

I use TE and love...

I use TE and love it. In fact, I used it to comment on this post.

You can use it for...

You can use it for all sorts of shortcuts which lift your day, like say:

a**hole for… The President of The United States, George W. Bush.

Or PITA for ‘you, our most esteemed client’

Just might need to double check your documents though…
