Hosts: Leo Laporte, Alex Lindsay, Andy Ihnatko, Chris Breen, Merlin Mann, and Scott Bourne

It’s the Macbreak Weekly Year Ender!

Here’s a direct MP3 download of MBW 70.

And here’s linkage to a few of the things I mentioned (adapted from this episode’s show notes):

And, of course, here’s the full, 2-hour version of the truly unbelievable Star Wars Holiday Special.

Happy Life Day, indeed.

Best. Remote. App.

I spent some time looking around at different applications as a replacement for Front Row and after giving them all a go, I was happy to find Remote Buddy. I use it to control my MacBook Pro with the Apple Remote and its worked flawlessly. I recall being hesitant at that point in the install as well, but I went for it anyway and was quite happy with the results.

I use it primarily to connect to the PC on my network that has most of my media on it, and this app has a clean interface to do that, and even choose which application I want to open with media with, all from the Apple Remote.

I heard your hesitation while listening to MacBreak Weekly and figured I would share my positive experience.

Thanks, Ruben!

This aligns with a couple other positive reports from listeners. Will give ‘er a try today!

One potential gotcha

just FYI, there is an incompatibility (at least on my system) with xGestures. the work around is to turn off "Enable xGestures" on it's preference pane before launching Remote Buddy & then turn it back on when you're done. i personally can't live without xGestures, but when i'm using Remote Buddy i'm no where near my mouse, so i'm happy.

"Sticky key" with Screen Sharing

Merlin, I think you were the one that commented last week that screen sharing sometimes acts like you have a key stuck. This is a bug I’ve experienced in VNC for years, and it’s the Control key that sticks. Tap it once or twice and it should go away for awhile.

Remote Buddy

Merlin I actually can’t believe that Remote Buddy has gone so long unnoticed by you guys on MBW… From what I’ve heard you mention, I think your favorite feature will be the ability to select which Airtunes speakers to stream to right from the iPhone… And you have to check out what you can do with a Wiimote and a few infrared LEDs…

Using Flextime with Omnifocus

Flextime and Omnifocus can be usefully glued together with applescript.

There is a sample script at http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=6474

another Remote Buddy fan

after deciding that i didn’t want to deal with the limitations of AppleTV, i got a mini and hooked it up to my tv. for a while i was mostly using Front Row with the Apple remote and a wireless mouse for other operations. finally decided to try Remote Buddy and have to say i like it a lot, especially the ability to use the iPhone as a remote.

i’d also give them credit for being upfront about installing a kernel extension. i’ve installed software that didn’t tell you that a kext was going to be installed, and even worse didn’t provide an uninstaller.

MacBreak Video

I love the MacBreak Video show! I’m sort of a newbie to the Mac though, so some of the vids are way over my head, but when they’re not, they’re great! I esp. loved the episodes waay back when you guys had Sal the Automator guy. I love Automator now because of what I learned from him. Keep up the great work on the MacBreak podcast!
