Macworld: HandBrake for converting TV episodes to AppleTV

Playlist: Ripping episodic DVDs

Let's say you've hypothetically picked up a DVD of hypothetical episodes of The Larry Sanders Show, and now you want an easy way to watch them on your hypothetical Apple TV. Well, Macworld's handsome Chris Breen comes to your hypothetical rescue with the help of HandBrake's new "Queue" functionality:

From the Title pop-up menu select the first episode that you’d like to rip (if it’s a TV show it will be 20 - 60 minutes long). In the Destination area you’ll see a File field. Give your file a unique name—BlahEpisode1, for example. Click the Presets button at the top of the window and, in the resulting Presets pane, select the appropriate preset (HB-AppleTV if you intend to rip that content for Apple TV, for example). Finally, click Add to Queue.

Just wanted to say congratulations, Merlin :)

Your new daughter is a real gorgeous bundle. Hope I'm not ruining it for everyone if i put your tweet here:

"A little while ago, my hour-old daughter laid on my chest for 30 minutes and sucked my pinky. I. Just. Wow. http://www.eleanormann.com/"

Things only get better from here. (You may want to repeat that as a mantra at 3am when you've had an hours sleep in the last 50 :D)

Tagging Text in a Document (OS X)

I am looking for a method to tag portions of text in a MS word document.

I am a law student, and I do a copicious amount of research and note taking. While I have a format to most of my notes and outlines, it would be a boon if I could tag sections of notes within the document. Thus I could later search for not only a keyword but a topic. This would help ID aspects of the topic that are not best expressed in the the major point heading.

If an example helps please see my post at macworld forums: http://forums.macworld.com/thread/98042?tstart=0

Justifying Mac purchase to company?

I have a friend who is a prof at a uni. She wants to use part of her budget to purchase a new laptop for work and prefers a Mac. The uni has a contract with IBM and would prefer her to buy a winbox. They told her she can "opt out" and purchase a Mac as long as she can justify the purchase. Can the 43f HiveMind give us some ideas on how she can justify the Macbook? She is a sociologist if that helps get your creative juices flowing.

Projects and Next Actions for Projects

Can anyone explain how they relate Next Actions per project? It's a little confusing in the book.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
