Using GTD To Tame The Beast Inside Of Me

It's the central contradiction at the heart of our all-too-finite existence that we cannot reconcile the uncontainability of our dreams with the futile limitation of our resources. It's no wonder we've come rely on strategies to get through the day. In David Allen's world, the metaphor is the overloaded information-driven workplace. For Merlin, it's the in-box.

iGTD, OmniFocus, Inbox and Things very briefly compared

A brief outline of my experiences so far:

OmniFocus and iGTD

  • extremely similar appearance and workflow
  • work well
  • very quick to enter info
  • both somewhat sloppy with the GTD model
  • neither provides a proper Waiting For list

Midnight Inbox

  • looks great - brilliant in fact
  • has a somewhat in-your-face attitude towards GTD
  • seems quite rigid, which may be a good thing or not
  • some interface weirdness
  • I found it slow to use, because it is often not clear how to do something

Dot Grid Notebooks

I am an architect. I recently began using the extra large (7.5" x 9.75") gridded Moleskine cahiers for my note-taking. They are nice, but, what would be even nicer would be a notebook of a similar size featuring a dot grid. Instead of defining the grid with lines, just dots at 5mm vertical and horizontal centers.

Behance offers one but it is too pricey at $14.00 and I really dislike perforated pages; they all too often come loose of their own accord.

Developing pronoid delusions

I like this page, filled as it is with encouraging (okay, some are pretty cheesy) tricks for the compulsive sad sack in each of us. The tips generally help clear the psychic garbage and focus on realigning our perceptions to stop looking for soul-crushing conspiracies and start noticing how many good things (blessings, if you like) are happening around us.

GTD/Seven Habits coexistence

Hi Everyone!

I've been attempting to implement GTD into my life and although I find it to be amazing, there's a bit of overhead that goes with it and sometimes I'm not consistent enough.

Anyway, one of the things that I personally have a problem with when it comes to time management is that I focus my attention on things which really are not too important. I mean, it would be much better if I shifted my priorities to things which really matter.

MacBreakZ - Your Personal Ergonomic Assistant

Designer, gentleman, and Vice-President of my Personal Board of Directors™, Doug Bowman, recently told me about this cool OSX app for reminding yourself to take frequent breaks.

MacBreakZ is a personal ergonomic assistant that monitors our keyboard and mouse use and helps us structure our computer use in a healthy and constructive manner, thus preventing computer-related injuries from developing.

I’ve long suspected that I will eventually have a hunch and a couple glass eyes from my execrable ergonomic habits, and this seems like a smart solution for reminding myself what my brain often neglects: sometimes it’s nice to stand up and walk around.

Apparently, you can even set it to lock up your box until you’ve successfully completed your break. Might be a bit much for most folks, but I’ll bet it’s a sure way to save your eyes and wrists from some hard mileage.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
