Admin: Why things are kind of slow around hereMerlin Mann | Aug 13 2007Pardon a meta post, but I wanted to offer an apology for the paucity of new feature-length posts here recently, as well as to provide some context for where that time's been going. A little "behind the scenes" insight, if you're curious. read more »POSTED IN:

Ads on 43F (and helping improve them)Merlin Mann | Oct 19 200543 Folders - October 2005 Reader Survey In deciding to run ads on 43 Folders, it's been important to me to try and get things right. Over the past few weeks you've seen the site go way over the edge, then pull back--mostly just so I could learn where that edge was, although it's also accidentally provided me with a fascinating crash course on how industry standard ad units and software work. I've also listened to you guys, moved some stuff around, and tried to keep things both sane and modestly profitable. Whether I've gotten that mix perfect on any given day will always be open to debate, but I'll tell you two things that are important to me: read more »POSTED IN:
Add on domains in A2hosting, and DreamweaverBob M | May 15 2008I signed up for A2 hosting using the 43folders coupon (I hope someone was able to have lunch on the commission;), and am wanting to set up an add on domain. This is where my first domain is: /public_html/ = domain1.com and /public_html/domain2/ = domain2.com i.e., both in the same file structure, but they appear as two separate domains. I use Dreamweaver and already have domain1.com's site root set to: /public_html/ where /public_html/index.htm read more »POSTED IN:
ETech Notes: Englishmen on the beach, attention deficit, and the 12-inch Life Hacks remixMerlin Mann | Mar 18 2005
I’m back from ETech and starting to recuperate a bit. It’s amazing how just a few days and nights can be so exhilarating and exhausting at the same time (esp. if one of those nights is spent on a fake beach with a lot of English people who drink like sailors). (Incidentally, if you have a pulse and a POP account, I probably owe you at least two email replies at this point, so accept this massive group apology until I can shovel my way toward the light.) I reckon that if my technical prowess were more mature, I might not have to confess that all my favorite conference stuff inevitably happens outside the sessions—although in the case of ETech, the ones I caught were all very good. But there’s a weirdly “Disney World” quality to wandering around a hotel lobby bumping into, literally, dozens of clever, hilarious people whose work you’ve admired and enjoyed for years. Such a thrill for me. Like meeting Santa, Han Solo, and The Monkees all in the same friendly bar. read more »POSTED IN:
Universal Binaries: MIA, catching up, and sometimes hackableMerlin Mann | Jun 15 2006So far, the upgrade to an Intel-based Mac Book Pro has been positively dreamy. Quicksilver -- for the first time in my usage -- is a totally "no-look" app, and even CPU-hungry Path Finder is do-able with my extra cycles. The real suckage has come from not having Universal Binary versions of the other little tools that I've come to rely on. Some, like fiwt, are not deal killers, since they can be approximated by other apps. But a few, especially LiteSwitch and AutoPairs had become so etched into my muscle memory, that I've spent the last few weeks falling over myself when they're not available. I like Witch okay as a LiteSwitch substitute, but I haven't really gotten into it with the same enthusiasm as LS (please update soon, Proteron!). If you've never seen it before, AutoPairs is a very swell PreferencePane that automatically helps "complete" punctuation for you:
Happily there's a simple little hack for getting AutoPairs to work in Rosetta (the non-Universal Binary way of running Classic apps on your Intel machine). As the author notes, you just need to copy a version of the System Preferences application from a PPC Mac to your new Intel Mac. It's located (on your old machine) at Great workaround, and it's so swell to have this modest chunk of func working for me again. If, for example, you use lots of operators in Google searches, this really speeds things up. For writing HTML quickly, it's just a lifesaver. POSTED IN:
Quicksilver & EntouragePaul Sherman | Sep 24 2007Hi, I am an independent project manager and use my Macbook Pro for business so I use Entourage for the work email and Apple mail for my personal email. Using Quicksilver I can find the contact but the compose email open automatically opens apple mail rather than Entourage. Does anyone know of any way that I can get it to create an Entourage email? Is it possible to choose the application for the email based on the contact? Any help that anyone could give me would be much appreciated. POSTED IN:
