Switch to OpenOffice? Pros and cons?

In Pakistan, bootleg copies of software are the norm. When you buy a computer, if you tell the people who are setting it up that you want genuine software, they look at you like you're crazy. So you go buy a computer, tell the tech support guy what software you want on it, and take it for granted that practically none of it will be legally yours.

Laundry Hacking

Making life easier isn't always about massive, miraculous changes in habit, or chucking vast quantities of your belongings. Sometimes, preventing just one little hassle can make your day.

detergent.JPGYou know how the little bit of soap left in the cup after you dump it in the wash always manages to leak down the side of the bottle when you recap it? Usually, you don't notice it until the next time you do the wash, and have to pry the jug loose from a sticky, lint-colored pool. To prevent this from happening, toss the cap in along with the wash instead of recapping the bottle right away. It comes out squeaky clean, and you just have to shake off a little water before screwing it back on the bottle. I suspect this would work with the top of a dish soap bottle too, though you'd have to ask Ray, the gallant cleaner.

Single-person project management

I'm a college student with a small software business and a few other projects that take up at least a few hours of my time every day.

As I've begun to intern at different tech companies, I've studied the way they manage projects.

One medium-size web/media company I worked at had very clear goals for each quarter in terms of sales and traffic, but also, as it affected my department (tech), what features needed to be added to the sites during each quarter.

Personal databases on the Mac?

My home computer, a laptop with Windows XP, is on its last leg and I'll need to replace it in the next few weeks. I'll likely switch to a Mac.

With that in mind, I'm using a Windows PC at work. I've been gathering and organizing my digital life using Evernote on a thumb drive for the past two years. It's been easy to access my data at both home and work, and print notes for reference on the go.

DYMO labelwriter and Leopard

My upgrade to Leopard went without any problems, thanks to good advice from wonderful sites like 43f. The only thing broken is my Quicksilver action to print to my DYMO LabelWriter 400. I upgraded to the latest drivers and nothing works.

Anyone has found a workaround for that?

Thanks, Denis

Calendar and reminder system for windows XP

Hi guys. I've recently been implementing a basic GTD system. But I am stuck on a good calendar and reminder system for windows. Currently I use google calendar for appointments (and an email reminder). However, I would prefer the option of a popup reminder for some events (I check email only twice a day). Also, I haven't figured out a good way to implement a tickler file. I have been creating all day events in goog calender. My ideal requirements would be :

  • desktop application
  • syncronization over 2 PCs.
  • ntegrated with desktop email
  • web access to my calendar (when traveling)

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
